Adding a second chartplotter

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. I decided not to add a second chart plotter at this time. The work to do so was greater than my current desire to have one, and I found a different way to achieve a similar outcome.

I happened to have an iPad Pro which I repurposed for use in the boat. I’m using the Navionics software which is a great companion to the Garmin chart plotter.

I purchased a FLIR Scion OTM 266 handheld thermal monocular. I considered the FLIR Ocean Scout and the
MD625 but chose the Scion. The benefits of the fixed FLIR didn’t outweigh the benefits of the handheld. The handheld provides versatility of use off the boat. I can stream the Scion to my iPad, phone or computer using an adhoc WiFi network and VLC software. I can also stream the feed to my PC using a USB cable. In the summer I can get 360 views from my command bridge using it as a handheld. If you look carefully you will see how I attached it on the mast. That’s a temporary solution using my RamMount. I will mount it with a screwed in base that will allow me to easily detach the FLIR when not underway.

For a rearward facing camera, I will use my GoPro Hero wirelessly streamed to my iPad or phone. Somewhat laggy but good for now.

Love this thread. After reading about the iPad's use on the boat my wife is giving me an iPad for Christmas. I had been using my phone to try and manage the GoPro and the SiOnyx night vision camera. The phone worked okay, but trying to view the small screen and click buttons on a moving boat wasn't optimal. Tested with her iPad and it makes a world of difference.

Looking forward to using the iPad with Active Captain too. It will be nice to have the additional screen.

Thanks to all for all the good information.

I use a Garmin VIRB as the rear facing camera wirelessly connecting to my iPad. Unfortunately, I can’t find any way to reverse the image (so that left and right are correct while facing forward). As far as I know the GoPro doesn’t have this feature either. Let us know if you find a solution for this.

I haven't figured out how to reverse the image on my GoPro. I looked at and tested a VIRB which is nice because you can display it natively on the 7612 chart plotter and it will reverse the image on it (if my memory serves me). I was only able to find the aviation bundle for my trial of the product but the more I looked for just the camera, it seems that Garmin is discontinuing the product which is a shame. The integration of the VIRB into my chart plotter was nice but I don't want to spend that kind of money for a product that is/will be discontinued. Wirelessly connecting it to my iPad worked only intermittently so I gave up trying to make it work.

Understood, unfortunately I have an older chart plotter 7212 which does not support the VIRB as it does not have wifi. I am now going to try one of the cheap WiFi backup cameras found online to see if that works. I want the display to be the iPad specifically because I already use it at the helm.

Finally got around to posting pics of my Pivot iPad case and mount in my photo album. It is the easiest, most sturdy option to mount an iPad at the helm station that I have seen. Mount is also available with a suction cup base to mount to windows, aft helm stations, whatever. Made for airplanes, but work great in the marine world.

JHhowland-

Nice looking setup with the Pivot mount & case.......could you share the following:

1. Model of Pivot mount attached to helm dash? Where purchased?
2. Model of Pivot case for iPad? Where purchased?
3. iPad model and size?
4. Any type of power connection to iPad?

Thanks,

I'd also like to see how to power the iPad with the Pivot mount.

Since I'm nearly always using AP and Auto-Guidance, I'm trying to find solutions that may make that possible with an iPad. This is one option I found that claims to work with the iNavX app that I run on my iPad: https://digitalyacht.net/2014/04/24/usi ... autopilot/

Latest update to the co-owned with JSoup '13 R31CB. Decided to add the 742 chart plotter up on the command bridge for another screen in our preferred driving spot, and to provide WiFi for the iPad at the lower helm (or wherever) as well as some other Garmin connectivity (ANT, Virb, etc.).

Not a fan of tablets in environments that they were not designed for based on past aviation experience. So I had a 7608 put next to the 7612 in my 2018 C28, networked them together, and am very happy with the redundancy, flexibility, and ease of use. I still have extra panel space for another device if I need. Especially nice to put the radar display on the smaller screen and keep the big one on the map or map/depth splitscreen.
