Adding fresh water tank

Has anyone added a fresh water tank, about 30 gallons, on a Ranger Tug? I talked to one of the Pocket Yacht people at Annapolis last week, and he indicated it wouldn't be a big deal on an R29.

The R-23 has a fresh water tank of approximately 22 gallons. In our cruising experience this is enough to get the first mate and myself through 3-4 days and nights. We’ve had no problems getting fresh water from any place that sells fuel even if we don’t need fuel. The larger tugs have even more water capacity. Have you investigated a water desalination unit?

On our R29, with it's 60 gallon tank and a little conservation, has done pretty well. If we expect to be away from a chance to fill, we tend to be in eve more conservative. However, it has never been our limiting factor.

If Pocket Yachts said that it wouldn't be a big deal to add one, do you know where they would mount it?

Phantom, a water tank can be purchased in any size and shape needed and placed where available space is located, with a simple extra water pump you can refill your potable water tank from your reserve tank. Just remember that a 25 gallon tank (full) would add 200 lbs to your boat so pick location wisely. I have two 30 gallon tanks that I added to my living quarters horse trailer for stock water and to replenish the house water, it was located on top in hay rack so no pump just gravity fed.

We purchased a couple 5 gallon foldable water bags off Amazon. When not in use they are easy to store but when we plan to be away from marinas we fill them and store below deck in the cockpit. We do tend to use more water when shrimping, crabbing, and fishing to cleanup the boat. From the cockpit I can empty the bags into the water fill on our R31cb.

Thank you all for your replies. My wife tends to be a 2 showers/day person. That was okay when we cruised for 2+ years on our Manta 40 catamaran with watermaker. We were mostly in clean water (Bahamas, Caribbean or open ocean), but don't want to put a watermaker on the Ranger when it may be a week or more either out of the water or in areas we wouldn't want to make water or have to flush the watermaker. At 8 lbs/gallon, I know placement of the tank needs to be a serious consideration.

I recall a post herein describing how the owner of his new tug replaced the marine head with an Airhead composting toilet and converted the existing never-used holding tank to potable water. This strikes me as an appealing creative solution which I am seriously considering for the R31 which we have on order. We too are moving from a 42’ catamaran with 200 gal of water tankage plus a watermaker.

With regards to the use of the holding tank for a water tank, if never used. I did this for a Tug customer and it was not that difficult to do along with the Airhead of course.
