Anyone have reports, good or bad, on the use of aftermarket filters? We all know that simple filters with the “brand name” are unreasonably expensive. What do you think?

I’ve been using Sierra for oil and fuel filters, as well as impeller, for the D4-260. I like them and the price.

Thanks. I will check them out.

I'm sticking with Volvo Penta brand for the filters. It's highly recommended by several trusted sources. Sure, They are more expensive but they hold the oil when removed better than the off brands. Also, they are actually designed for your specific Volvo engine. Even at intervals of 100 hrs, that's only about $10/hr vs, what $8? Oil is oil tho so I stuck with Dello 400 because that has always been run in this engine.

You can get oil filters for D-4 Volvos at Napa. Number for the front filter with the small thread is 400063. Rear filter is 7251.
Crankcase ventilation filters are $15 on Amazon, $200 if you have to buy one in Port McNeill.
I think I'd wait till warranty expires to switch but for us that was two years.

The way I understand it is that you should stick with the Volvo brand Oil filters, as they retain the oil better for more thorough filtering, but getting crankcase and air filters aftermarket are fine. That's what I have done. Same with the secondary fuel filter, stuck with Volvo, but bought racor for my primary. We are offshore 95% of the time so eliminating potential issues to save a few pennies isn't worth it for me.

Both of my Volvo filters have the same number. I figured them to be identical? They look identical.
