Looking to upgrade from the standard dual frequency P79 to a Chirp ready model ie P75M.
Has anyone tried this?

I looked at doing it. The cable running was really off putting.

I have looked at changing mine as well, but the mounting location on my C30-CB is nearly inaccessible by any normal sized human, and then what he said about the cable running.... I ideally want a much stronger thru hull transducer. At my next haulout (2024??) I'll debate doing it along with the auto trim, bottom paint, and underwater lights.

I upgraded my Airmar P79 to a GT15M-IH then installed a 2nd as a Transom mounted transducer for better fishing (GT51M-TM).

Both connect directly to the 7612xsv plotter.

Are the transducer cables a solid run to the Chartplotter or is there another connection point?
Ie can you reuse the P79 cable with the GT15 upgrade?

Thanks

I would be interested to know more about how you mounted the transducer to your transom. I have a C-28 and have considered either upgrading to the Chirp in hull or going with a smaller Garmin unit in the cockpit and a transom mount transducer. Did you us a mounting plate (with 5200) on the hull or attach/drill into the transom? Thanks.

If I recall if you want any sort of upgrade from the airmar you need a new cable that has more wires.

I have an older 5212 chart plotter which has a separate sounder black box. The new plotters have it all built in. Further more I believe there are NMEA transducers that might make cabling easier.

Pretty sure it was a new 8 pin cable run directly to the chart plotter.

They used a glue on product called Stern Saver so no xtra holes needed.

RT (Andrew) suggested installing the new transducer under the stove on my Rt29, a much simpler cable run to the Chartplotter . Under to the fridge and then across. Also has the advantage of being a much quieter location for sonar.
Will be doing that in the near future.

Also spoke to Garmin, they suggested going with the GT15IM.

Over the winter, I added a GT36UHD transducer to my R-23. This is in addition to the GT15 installed by the factory. I will say I am amazed by the clarity and quality of the imaging on DownVu and SideVu. It was a fairly easy install. Used a transom stick on pad to mount the transducer. Ran the cable up behind the fridge to the Y-Adapter on my 943XSV.
