AIS app for iPhone and iPad is amazing!! $4.99 for iPhone and $6.99 for iPad. IPad is HD and real time. My iPad is an essential part of my nav equipment with Navionics installed. Allan on Stout

Ship finder HD for your I Pad, Ship Finder for your phone. The I Pad version is great! I am currently sitting in my room at the Hilton on the SF Bay. I can turn Ship Finder on and see the name of all of the vessel transitting the bay. Not only is it a great tool underway but, a great toy in a place like the bay area!

Thanks, We have Ship Finders, it's fun to see our own Ranger on it with the photo, I wondered though what Allan had bought.

Regards

David & Maureen - though not exactly AIS, I have to agree with you about "Ship Finder". also, you may want to check out "Marine Traffic". The only major difference seems to be that Marine Traffic labels each vessel icon with its name. One morning I noticed on Marine Traffic that our favorite Holland America ship was berthed in Stavanger, Norway. I also have an app with numerous Web Cam favorites, and I switched apps to the cam in Stavanger just in time to watch Eurodam sail out of the port. Pretty cool. So now I will check out AIS for iPhone.

D&M (again) - the only AIS app i find in the Apple App Store is "AIS Radar" by Guenter Obittschning ?? Priced at $11.99.

Free for the Android users.

The free or low cost AIS apps for IPads and IPhones are "Ship Finder" and "Marine Traffic". Since the actual AIS signal is being translated to a web site, in practice this can be off anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour. The only way to get actual AIS real time is to have an AIS receiver or transceiver module in your VHF radio. Then you can get a plot on your chartplotter of AIS targets.

The apps though are great, just realize that objects shown maybe closer than they appear.

The app I bought is ShipFinder HD and it is in real time so you see the AIS ships moving. A tap identifies the ship and then tap on the ID then gives further detail including size, speed and destination. You can toggle on to show the ship's track as well. I should have identified the app on my first post. Sorry. It is unclear to me whether you need wifi or cellular data active to use the app but my guess is you do. If so, it would still be worth it to have the cellular data active on board and get a Canada sim card when up north. Allan on Stout

Hi Allen, I also have ShipFinder HD. Although it is close to real time, it is not. According to the web site: "Ship Finder provides near real time “virtual radar” AIS maps." It is great for getting a head's up for large commercial ships and ferries. But just be aware that vessels may be closer than they appear on the the app. Also you do need a cellular connection for the app to work, as it receives its data from the web. A Canadian sim card will be a must when we return. We "forgot" to turn off our router on one of our trips over the border, and got a $60 increase in our bill for a couple of hours of being connected and roaming. We look forward to spending more time there on our next trip.

We use ShipFinder HD on our IPad when we are in the PNW. We use Marine Traffic on our IPad when we are on the Gulf Coast. ShipFinder does not cover our area of the Gulf, but does a great job in the NW.
