Is it a standard BMW part? Thanks for your help.

I do not have the part information, but any local alternator repair shop should be able to rebuild at a reasonable cost. If it is a common part they may even be able to just switch your out with a rebuilt.

I do a lot of off the grid cruising on my R27 2011, so I do have a lot of spares. I found that it is next to impossible to rebuild the Valeo alternator on my 4BY180. The shop said that this company makes propriety alternators and parts making it almost impossible to rebuilt this alternator. I did find that a company in Europe called Energy Parts, supplies the same spec'ed alternator called a Guttels 127745 for 178.300 Euros plus 50 Euros for UPS shipping that took four days. They took a credit card but like Paypal. The alternator was installed and it fits perfectly. The only mishap was one of the two connecting wires disappeared while hooking up the alternator but charged higher than spec'ed for the batteries. I later found the errant wire and reattached it, everything is working well. I did not check the BMW dealers. I have not dug into the starter motor for its replacement information, If anyone has a picture of the nameplate on the starter for the 4BY180 Yanmar engine, please post it or PM me, thanks

If I were in the market for a new alternator (happily, I’m not — knock on wood), I would probably work with the guy that runs the “Marine Know How” blog/website. His technical articles have helped me on a variety of projects, and he seems to know his stuff. He sells a few things through his website. Alternators appear to be something of a specialty of his, in case you are interested. Here is a link to the articles he has posted on alternators: https://marinehowto.com/category/alternators/

Good luck!

On a 1986 vintage French sailboat we used to own, the engine had an 85 Amp Valeo alternator. It looked identical to Motorola alternators of similar to later vintage. Although it came with an internal regulator module, it was easy to remove the module and connect the alternator to an external 3-stage regulator. Sure wish we could do this on our Volvo-Penta.
Do not know anything about the alternator in question though.

On our 2011 R-27, the alternator died on a trip to Catalina. It was an OEM Valeo unit.

Upon returning home, I tried to get this unit rebuilt. It turned out that the regulator was not available. I found a Duralast #11083 at Autozone that was a Bosch with the right frame size, mounting and output specs. The difference was that the pulley offset was not compatible. I swapped the pulley from the old unit to the new and everything has worked fine for two years. By the way, this alternator was ~$100 and had a lifetime warranty from Autozone. Further research looks like Duralast #15058, 2009-11 BMX 335D, should have the correct pulley on it.

FYI, the engine needs around 9amps to power the fuel pump, computer, injectors etc. How do I know? We left Two Harbors under cloudy skies and showed a pretty good voltage drop on the engine battery. A few hours later, when we had full sun and 10amps out of the solar panel, the engine battery voltage stabilized. Nice to know that we had some electrical redundancy on board.

take care,
Brendan
