Had some spare time today so 1st Mate and I took a spin up to Anacortes for the Trawler Fest. We met up with Jeff & Andrew and looked over the Ranger Tug boat models.

I'm still smitten by the R-27.

The Volvo D3-200 looks awesome and with the engine hatch open I noted the Y-valve for the overboard waste is located in the engine bay. The engine exhaust feeds from the rear starboard corner all the way over to the port side exhaust opening in one piece... it's a flexible pipe/tube and very sturdy... so leaks shouldn't exist/develop.

I noted that in the rear of the engine bay on port side there's a horizontal non-skid foot rest of about 1 sq foot. A nice touch and very useful when you have to work in the engine bay with your feet planted down there.

I was unaware that the R-27 cabin is some 8" longer than on the R-25 Classic. The R-27 cabin sure feels and looks bigger in all directions.

The new dinette table is absolutely awesome and very stable with no rocking motion I could detect. The forward facing seat at the dinette table is very easy to get onto with the new table. In the R-25 Classic it's a PITA... but of course manageable.

The Volvo engine throttle control at the helm not only looks good but its neutral position has detents making it obvious when it's positioned in neutral.

There's an extra step for mounting oneself onto the port side Nav seat making it easier for some. I noted the Nav seat's foot rest has gone or for some reason not installed on the show boat.

There's some extra head room in the V-berth. At first I noted something different but could not put my finger on it until Andrew told me the secret.

The head/toilet/shower room is definitely larger -- longer I suspect.

Extra top-side hatch over the cave opening lid... nice.

I do like the tan surfaces in the R-27's cockpit area. No such luck for the R-29s mind you because its deck includes the cockpit so the R-29s cockpit is snow white 🙁 . The R-27's cockpit transom seat is lower than on the R-25 Classic and IMO is easier to sit on as it's lower.

The cabin entrance head room area is much wider allowing for two nice shelves to be located up there.

Watched Andrew dock an R-25SC in from a customer sea trial... he came in sideways with the thrusters... impressed the heck out of the onlookers. 🙂 I wish cars could perform this trick...

There's much less Monkey fur in the R-27... nice.

Garmin 7212 is the new Chart Plotter along with the color display for the Volvo engine.

Button push to start and stop the engine... Typical Volvo addition these days.

Andrew explained how access to the impeller is done. Andrew says they are now replacing the toggle release hatch in the cabin step's riser with a nice piece of Teak. Remove this Teak riser and slide a bulkhead piece to the port side and full access to the impeller is possible... while laying face down mind you.

How can you not like the R-27 today ?

When are you ordering a R27? You know you want that Volvo engine!

Howard

That's what I tell myself everyday, how can you not love the R-27.

Now you have got us MORE excited and still another 7-8 weeks before we get to see ours 😀
Cheers

Anyone going to Trawlerfest this weekend should pay attention to the R-21EC... It's our TUGBUG!! We'll be there Sat and Sun, keeping ruffians off of her. 🙂

TugBug is being displayed honorably outside the tents. She looks great! The graphics are perfect. Enjoy your time there and good luck keeping "Ruffians" off her. You will be dealing with that for as long as you own her.

Thanks Ray! "Outside the tents?" Is she on the water? I'm not sure about the layout up there.

Paul: TugBug looked great and is in a Prime location and not in the water. I fended off all who came within 10 feet of her. I almost made a sign "Special Edition - NOT FOR SALE". I'm guessing 100s of people have passed TugBug by with water in their eyes... almost enough to float her on dry land.

TugBug is on display outside the main white tent and opposite the Cap Sante marine office which is painted in a pale blue with dark blue trim. If you park outside Anthony's and walk over toward the big white tent you will bump into TugBug.

Thanks, Barry. Not in the water, eh? Poo. Can't wait to see her though!

It's on one of those nice aluminum trailers. Shows its portability very nicely. Bring those mountain dogs and show everyone what this vessel can and will do 🙂. Oh, and bring a towel too, it rained on it on her :?

Ray: When TugBug makes it to Edmonds Marina next week it will be tucked away undercover meaning the PNW rain will not be an issue. I continue to be amazed how much cleaner and the lack of oxidation/fading of our gelcoat is with the boat protected by a cover. At first I thought it was a luxury when first selecting a covered moorage slip but over the past 4 years I do believe it's paid for itself in keeping our R-25's gelcoat looking in pristine condition. I've only waxed the hull and superstructure once and that was because I was twiddling my thumbs watching the boat being scrubbed last year for a new bottom paint.

Update to things I noticed on the 2013 R-27...

1)
The Refrigerator freezer section is larger (full width) than on the R-25 Classic model.

2)
The waste pump out chrome cap is set lower on the transom top edge and the railings there are a tad higher than on earlier R-27s. This should make things easier for using the large Marina pump out nozzles with the extended rubber tube.

3)
On the R-27 model I visited the helm seat did not rotate as on earlier models. It did however slide back and forth.

To make sure Tug Bug was getting some attention, I rolled out of bed at 6:00 am this morning to go and wipe her down. It appears that a large dog has been inside! Boat looks great!

Andrew, between Titans paw prints, lingering factory dust, and everyone's grubby mitts all over her, you have your work cut out for you until Thursday.

Ha ha ha... Been fun silently observing people look her over.

Also, I can confirm that the stereo and iPod dock works jut fine......
