What do you use while on the hook? Anchor Chain pulls on the windlass. Do you use a bridle? A snubber? Some other solution?

C.S. Johnson Chain Snubber Hook - Small Hook without Line. Defender sells the hook. I keep it simple. I use two 1/2" 25' dock lines Shackle and Snubber hook. It's easy to attach and easy to release.

Take a line and tie a rolling half hitch knot on the anchor chain. Tie the bitter end of the line off on the windlass cleat after bringing it through a chock. Let the chain out until the load is on the line, bit of slack in the chain. You now have a snubber and it hasn’t cost any extra dollars. The knot is easy to tie and you can see videos of it online.

I purchased a Mantus chain hook. It works very well and keeps your anchor chain from pulling on your windlass gypsy. The other options mentioned here are certainly good choices as well. There is a plastic piece that you can rotate on the Mantus chain hook so that the chain does not come out of the chain hook. A description is here: https://www.mantusmarine.com/mantus-anchor-knowledgebase/snubbersbridles/

When we trailer I use a 5,000 pound rated carabiner connected between the forward cleat and the anchor chain to take the pressure off the windlass and to ensure the anchor can’t possibly drop while towing.
We’re pretty new to anchoring out but every time we do I have much more than just the 50’ of chain deployed. I secure the rode to the forward cleat. We have 200’ of anchor rode in addition to the 50’ of anchor chain. Same process when we are stern tied at anchor.

I agree that the chain should be tensioned so as not to put load on the windlass. I bought a suitable sized hook and some 3 strand nylon line and spliced up my own chain hook. It’s easy and satisfying to do, and I know my anchor is secure while underway! If anchoring in shallow waters (where only the chain part of the anchor rode is deployed), the hook can be used to take load off the windlass if you don’t have an anchor bridle.

Sue I do not know how to splice the line. do you have a video link?

You will find it’s not too difficult!

I have a book that shows a bunch of splices, but here is a video.

The technique is the same whether you are making an eye or splicing two ropes together.
