anchor launch

Pete Cleland installed a Manson 33# anchor on his R-29 by extending the davit forward redrilling the holes. I thing Stuart of Spirit of Gratitude did the same. I installed a Rocna #22 on my 29 by the same means. I hope this helps.

I see that you are in a C-Dory. I am not sure if these will help but here are some pics of my anchor set up.

I have the Manson Supreme 35lbs. What a great anchor! We went bigger then what the chart said would work. It was right on the line, so we went to the next size up. Bob is right. I re drilled the pivot point hole 1 1/2" back from where it was.
If it is blowing 30kts we may not sleep very good but we are not going anywhere.

I considered extending the launch that comes with the boat, but the harp is too tight around the shank of the anchor and will most likely hang up when trying to launch. Also the launch seems a little flimsy for an anchor weighing 33 lbs. I haven't been able to locate a similar launch that is a little more beefier. By the way this will be for the new boat an R-27.
Thanks for the input!

Beefier is good. You can't go wrong with that.
I will say that we have used ours over 250 times and all is very well with it. It works great! 🙂

Has anyone considered modifing their tug to add a small anchor pulpit? I personnally think the boat should come standard with one with the rail formed around it. I have often thought of fabricating a combination teak/seaboard board which mounts below the anchor roller and extended an extra foot of so forward. But then I would have a R26 and we would need a new forum.

Actually, I am somewhat lazy and find it easier for all you guys to pave the way (make the mistakes also).

Well, I guess I can live with the existing bow roller by extending it, but then I have to get around trying to get the anchor shaft to fit between the roller and the harp. The manson must be narrower, the Rocna measures just shy of 4 inches and binds on the harp. I guess I could try to squeeze the harp to elongate it a little and see what happens. Oh, the joys of modifications!

OK, I thought I was pretty up to speed on my nautical nomenclature, but that the heck are the "manson" and the "harp" anyway?

The Manson is a brand of anchor, the harp is the metal hoop that attaches to the front of the davit and fits over the anchor shank when the anchor is stowed.
All the best
Bob

Manson is the brand of anchor pictured in the post above. http://www.manson-marine.co.nz/SitePages/Supreme.htm

I think the "harp" is also called a bail - the metal loop normally found on the outer end of the anchor roller which serves to keep the anchor and rode from jumping off the roller.

Having sailed and cruised and depended on my anchor in some tight spots, I highly recommend an extremely robust anchor system. I would not extend an anchor roller without some serious reinforcing. I'm not yet familiar with the RT anchor roller installation - I just know the amazing amount of force my rig withstood during a sudden summer squall in Key West.

You may not plan to be in those conditions, but you may not get the choice.

YMMV, Garry

You will need to replace the harp with a 6" one.

Well, it looks like I may go full circle with this. I looked at an R-27 and it has a hole already 6" further back on the front roller assembly, so it looks like I can just move the entire roller assembly forward to accomodate the shank length. My next thought regarding the "harp/bail" will be to squweeze it in a vice and that may elongate it just enough to accomodate the anchor shank height. I like the idea of just buying a higher "harp/bail" and will have to get the manufacture's name and see if they have one available. And just to hedge my bet, I am going to have the boat shipped without the launch attached.
Thanks guys for all of your input. It was really helpful.

Most marine stores will have the various sizes of harps for whatever set up you have. If not just get the width and you already have the height, and just order one.
