The default anchor on my C30-CB seems like it might be a little on the light side. It's the lewmar galvanized claw, not sure of the exact size. What anchors have others upgraded to that fit on the bow roller and within the constraints of the opening in the bow / under the swim step?

We got our new C28 this past July and the first thing my wife said “that anchor looks to small”. She has about 45 years boating experience and and me 9 years. She was very surprised how well the anchor held and said in past experiences they had issues with the anchor holding. Only have 152 hours on the boat and no issues with the anchor provided.

Hi Dave,
You will find a LOT of opinions on anchors here. Seems like the winners are Rocna and Mantus for holding power. I have the Mantus 35 on my R29.

That is what I've come across as well in searching the forum. Will likely go with one of those. I really like the stainless steel, but they are ungodly expensive...

I changed my 16 lb. factory claw out for a 35 lb Mantus M2. I had to tighten up my Windlass for it to seat properly on the roller.
Regarding S/S. The galvanized will last longer than you! The factory claw is now a spare, along with a Fortress 25.

I cut my factory chain down from 48 feet to 30 feet. The extra 18 feet is used for the Bruce for lunch or safe anchorage over-nights with 150' of 3-strand. Yes, I know the factory says 50 feet of chain, but mine was just 48'. And, rule of thumb says one foot of chain per foot of boat, or per pound of anchor, depending where you read. I chose per foot of boat, more or less. The Fortress is a spare storm anchor with 30' of chain and 250' of 3-strand nylon.

Rocna 15 (33#) has been great for us, and commonly recommended around Puget Sound. Fit C30 with no modification to roller. Mantus is also supposed to be great!

DBsea,
We have an R29S. I changed to Rocna 15 (33lbs) and haven't looked back. It sets hard and holds well for us.

As fo the stainless....I was told once, "You buy a Stainless Anchor when you have nothing else to spend money on for the boat." I haven't got there yet....But they are pretty. 🙂

Good luck!

Rocky

Thanks all for the recos. Ordered the rocna from fisheries!

I hope one day I reach that point. But burning 20gph of fuel, it's not likely. Lol 😀
Plus, then I'd have to polish it.

These are very wise words ! I definitely went with the galvanized!

I liked the stainless anchor we put on our R25 so much that when we ordered our R29S we bought another stainless anchor for it.
Not only does it look compatible with the anchor roller and bow rails but the mud washes off much easier than the galvanized (it generally is clean by the time it clears the water and requires no hanging over the bow with a brush or hose like the galvanized).
We have continued with using the Bruce style anchor that comes with the Ranger Tug because we have had very good performance with it setting quickly and holding fast in the Great Lakes where we use the boat most often or in the mud bottoms on other inland lakes ( our second anchor is a light weight Fortress which also hold extremely well in our typically sand or soft mud bottoms as long as there is not heavy weed cover).
