The anchor roller on P D is configured such that the anchor size is limited to the present claw - 11 kg. what other anchors fit, and has anyone moved the pivot point of the roller assembly to permit a larger anchor ?
RB

I have an R-27 I moved the pivot forward to the next hole and fit a 35# Rocna and a Manson Supreme. I did have to get an enlarged bale for the front though for the Manson.

We have an R31 which I believe has the same size anchor roller set up as the R29. We just replaced the 22 lb claw with a Rocna 15 kg. no adjustments were required to the roller assembly or the size of the bail.

I would love to see pictures (hint hint)

For those that own the newer design R29S or R29CB...have any of you upgraded your anchor to a Rocna 15KG/33lb.? I'd like to hear if that particular model fit and or if there were adjustments needed to accommodate the Rocna 15kg.

Thanks for your replies,

Jim F

I did see that on the Rocna web sight, thank you. It was here I saw that the Rocna 15kg/33lb was best suited for the weight of an R29S. With that info I'm wanting to find out if anyone has outfitted a newer style R29 with this Rocna sized anchor? How it fit or doesn't and or if any adjustments needed to be made.

Hey Jim, I am pretty certain that the Rocna 15 will fit on the roller. I think folks with 31s are running this anchor. I was going to buy a 15 for our new 29CB and asked Andrew about this and he was pretty adamant that the Rocna 10 that I put on my R27 would do fine. So I put my Rocna 10 on and have the bruce as my spare. His experience was that the 22lb bruce anchor the factory puts on the boats does a good job, and the Rocna would be even better. So we went with our Rocna 10 last summer and had zero issues other than hanging it up one day on a rocky bottom....and taking about an hour to get it off. The performance of the Rocna is so good that you can go with the one you have on your 27. Andrew said to assume 11,500 lbs for the boat, which lies at the upper end of the sizing for a Rocna 10. But if you read their literature, including the great website from the guy who designed the anchor, they claim they have over-sized it with a big margin of safety.

Still, who is going to complain because their anchor is too good? I suppose the windlass might complain, but on a stormy night, not me....but the 10 has worked fine.

Hope that helps

Jeff

Have people reported dragging with the factory provided 22 lb bruce outfitted on the R-29? I understand the rocna is reportedly better, but is upgrading to a rocna 10 (22 lb) or 15 (33 lb) advisable?

+1 on Jim's question... I'm also curious if the rocna 15kg/33lb fits on the newer 29 without modification.

thanks!

We've had a Rocna on our R27 and a similar style on our prior 40' trawler. Over 10 years I can recall one time we've lost footing with these great anchors. Anchoring out a lot we just feel more secure with this style anchor vs a bruce, danforth etc. The Rocna and like types are more suited for various sea bottoms like mud, sand, rock or boulders whereas others are best in fewer seabed conditions. For my money I'd prefer the Rocna style but like many things in boating you'll get different opinions and thats ok.

From website..
"If you want to increase the potential holding power of your system for the same scope, then the answer is to put the focus back on the anchor. If you have adequate scope deployed yet your anchor tends to drag, consider upgrading to a superior modern design. At the same time you could also increase the size of the anchor. Taking a few kilograms of weight out of the chain and putting it into the anchor results in a significant increase in holding power."
We went with the Rocna 10 (22lbs) and we sleep well 😉

Hey Jim
I found this pic of the stock anchor on a R-29 with some reference measurements. Not sure why I took it, maybe it will help.

We went to a Rocna 10 on our R-29 on Andrew's recommendation. It has never dragged, so far, even in 35+mph wind all night in Desolation Sound. Of course, I was concerned and stood watch most of the night because boats around us were dragging. I think a Rocna 10 is fine for a R-29 and very adequate for any tug smaller.

We swapped the stock anchor on our R-29S for a Rocna 33# without any alterations.

Jim, I'm curious if you have the Rocna 10 or 15? I'm going to upgrade as well. Any problems with the fit?

Thanks,

Tim Kennedy

We added the Rocna 15 to our 2019 29CB with no alterations or adjustments required. To date I am quite pleased with it. In Florida our bottom can be quite varied from soft sand to muddy or grassy bottoms and some hard bottom. To date it has has grabbed fast and hung tight, even in some hard blows. If choosing between the 10 and 15 I would without a doubt take the 15. The boats setup is suited to it and you will sleep better on the hook knowing you have a solid setup on holding you in place.

YOLO,

Thank you for the input. Hard blow July 4th picked our Bruce....I need the confidence of the Rocna and was hoping I’d here what you just said. 15 it is!!

Tim: we have the 15 and there was no extra modifications needed replacing the stock anchor. It has work perfectly for 3 years on our 29.
