Our new 2018 Ranger Tug 31-S is equipped from the factory with a Lewmar 22 lbs. Galvanized Claw anchor. This seems on the “wimpy” side.

A boating neighbor recommends that I upgrade to a Mantus anchor, either 25 or if possible 35 lbs (if it will fit on the anchor roller hardware).

Please check out the Mantus anchors at http://www.Mantusmarine.com and give me your opinion.

Thank you.

Hi Kaptajnen,

We have a 31 CB and we upgraded to the 35lb Mantus. It fits perfectly and so far we have been very happy with it.

The only thing to be aware of is if you trailer your boat you will need to pull the anchor on the boat before you load it on the trailer. It gets in the way of the winch on the trailer.

FWIW, we upgraded to the Rocna 15 (33 Lbs) for our R25sc and it fits perfectly, as it was made for it. No modifications were necessary and we don't need to pull it up to clear our trailer mast. I realize the Mantus is a little different shape, but your boat is much bigger ... I would expect it should fit.
We have pictures of it in our album.

On our R29S we upgraded to a Rocna. I also have to put the anchor on the bow of the boat when we launch and retrieve. With that said I feel it’s worth the upgrade to a Rocna, Mantus or like type anchor, even after knowing there’s extra work involved if you trailer, especially if you anchor out!

Here’s another vote for the Rocna. Did a bunch of research and the Rocna 10 (kg) has been great.

We replaced our Lewmar with a Rocna 10 on Restless. Couldn't be happier. The Rocna sets quickly and doesn't budge when the wind pipes up, even in bays where the Lewmar would never set because of heavy kelp bottoms.

We replaced our Lewmar 7.5kg with a Rocna 10kg with no mods to the anchor roller on our 2019 R27-OB. We are fortunate there are no issues at the winch stand with launch or retrieval. Rocna has a very aggressive design and a great reputation.

We have a Rocna 15 (33 Lbs) on our R31 Sedan. The few times we have used it, we have been very happy. It fits fine on the roller, BUT the winch has a single fast retrieval speed. If the anchor is not aligned (as in twisted) when it contacts the roller, pandemonium reigns supreme. The solution is a 1/2 inch ratchet. I bring the anchor to within a couple feet of the roller with the windlass, then turn the winch with the ratchet the last little bit.

We also upgraded to the Rocna 15 on our R-31 and installed a swivel between the last link of chain and the anchor shackle. We tease the anchor up the last little bit after it breaks water with pulses of the windlass and have never had a problem. We used a Mantus swivel to get away from the problem of conventional swivels not being able to take lateral forces.
