After looking hard at the 10kg bruce on the front of epiphany, I think I'm going to upgauge to to the 15kg Rocna. Curious if anyone here has upgraded from what I think is an undersized bruce...

I thought the exact same thing. I tried it out first. I have 50' of chain plus the rode. It works fine. I think the amount of chain you have is very important. You need at least the length of your boat in chain, it holds the anchor parallel to the bottom. I guess the type of bottom is important. Mine is muck or soft sand.

You'll should get lots of feedback on your anchor question, much like bottom paint...it's all good information. The Rocna, Manson and similar style anchors are, in my opinion, the best all around anchors for the widest variety of anchoring seabed conditions. I agree with The Pug's Tug that 50' of chain makes a significant difference in an anchoring hold and should be considered a must, the more chain the better. I had a Bruce style anchor on a prior 40' boat and lost footing on anchorages many times, mostly in the middle of the night in the middle of a storm. I swapped that anchor for a Buegle (another Rocna style anchor) and never once did the boat loose a hold while at anchor. When we bought the R27 I went straight to the Rocna 15 and in three years I'm happy to say I sleep very soundly at night in all kinds of conditions without fear of waking up to an anchor alarm going off, and we anchor a lot. Obviously it is still very important to go thru a proper anchor setting routine. I'd suggest making the change and use the Bruce as a stern and or a backup anchor.

I followed Kismet's lead on this and upgraded to the Rocna while relegating the Bruce to stern anchor. This after a couple of exciting anchor releases and difficult sets in the PNW. 50' chain an absolute must. Highly recommend the Rocna or something like it.

Did the same, Rocna 15Kg up front and the Lewmar Claw as a back-up or stern anchor.

The Manson supreme has worked well for me. Similar design to Rocna, but a bit less expensive. I think they got over a patent infringement by making the shank bigger and heavier. The blade is somewhat thinner than the Rocna. So far three years of a full nights sleep.

Same as the others. I wanted to carry a spare anyway so the factory anchor, chain and rode are stored and the Rockna 15 with 50 feet of chain is hanging off the windless.

Having the anchor and fifty feet of chain hanging off the bow must make the boat handle poorly, especially in shallow water.

Rocna 15 Kg on the factory 50' chain works great and fits perfect. We haven't had any problems with anchor drag since we made the change. It digs in the sand and soft mud really well.

THanks for all of the guidance here....ended up with the Rocna 15 from Defender...should be here tomorrow!
