We had our first anchoring experience on Cutwater 30. We already changed out to a Rocna 15k. ( My wife and I have spent over 1000 days at anchor in our other boats. We take anchoring very seriously.)

How do you secure the rode to the boat, other than using the windlass. I brought the rode to the bow cleats, which placed the rode over a sharp part of fiberglass. (I improvised chafe protection.)

I plan on adding 50-75 feet of chain (I know Andrew said to stop at 100ft of chain). Using a snubber will enable me to use the bow cleats and fairleads. If I want to anchor in more than 20 feet of depth (adding 5 feet off the water to the anchor roller), I will have to add rode to get to 5 to 1.

How do the rest of you secure the rode?

Also, are there any comments on using an anchor swivel?

Not sure about the Cutwater but on our R27 there is a cleat between the windlass and the anchor bale that we use to tie off rope rode. As far as a swivel it is my opinion the less moving parts I have with my anchor the better off I am from something breaking. The rochna swivels very nicely with the roll bar anyway. We've had a rochna for over 8 years, anchor out a lot without a swivel and have never lost our footing at anchor.

We have an Ultra anchor and Ultra swivel, with 50 feet of chain and 160 feet of rope rode. At anchor, we use one of the mooring lines as a snubber, running it through one of the bow fairleads, with canvas charge protection. We use a rolling hitch to attach it to the rode. The combination has exceeded my expectations, after a summer spent in SouthEast Alaska.
