Anchors

Since I left my primary anchor, a 22 lb Horizon Claw, at Hope Island last summer (along with 30 ft of chain and 70 ft of rode), I've been hunting for another. Given the results reported for the Delta and Rocna, I thought I'd switch. Has anyone tried using these? Ever try to mount these larger sized anchors on a R-25 roller? I'm planning on buying the 22 lb version - it will be my working anchor.

I have a Rochna, the smallest one they make 20 pounds, I think). They are distributed in Canada through West Marine, but the supplier is is Suncoast Marine Ltd. (www.suncoastmarine.ca). I think they are in Gibsons, BC. Mine cost me around $400 last June.

I've been very pleased with the anchor. I do a lot of Race Committee work and therefore a lot of anchoring. I just drop and forget, hardly ever "setting" the anchor. For other anchoring I wouldn't be so casual. I had to extend the bow roller "U" forward because of the length of the stock, so it sticks out about 16" in front of the boat. 40' of chain' 250' of nylon 3-strand line.

According to their chart, Rocan makes a 4kg, 6kg and 10kg version. I was planning on the 10kg. Today's list price for the 10kg is $399, so I'm guessing that's the one you have. They are offering a 15% discount for USCG Auxiliary, with free shipping so I'll save a little. But, all the reports I've heard highlight how well it holds, so I think it is worth it for me.

Could you help me understand exactly how you handled the extra length? I am not worried about the bail, I can always do without or fabricate another one. But how did you do the roller extension? Any chance of seeing a picture?

We use a nine pound Bulwagga on Tugly. It is a bit ugly but fits nicely on the bow and we have never had it fail. You big guys in the 25's and 29's would certainly want a bigger version. Check it out, you might be surprised at the test results. You can see our Bulwagga mounted on the bow in numerous pictures in our Tugly album.

I'm not a big fan of Danforth type anchors. But, I started using Fortress anchors right after they came on the market with great success due to their high holding power, light weight high-tensile aluminum-magnesium alloy construction, the fact that you can quickly break it down for easy storage and ease of replacing individual parts. I hung one up in some coral in the Bahamas and had to pull it out with a lot of power from the engines. This resulted in slightly bending one of the flukes, Fortress replaced the part without any questions.
