Annie and I arrived at Sweetwater Landing marina just east of Fort Meyers Florida after a little over a week of towing from the San Francisco Bay Area. It was about 3200 miles. We plan to do the Florida mini loop over the next 4 weeks. We need to get to Stuart on the East side before January 2nd when the lock closes for a few months. Wish us luck!

Do you see a new light gray R29 CB at SweetWater? If so that’s ours yet we haven’t even seen it yet..we live in Fort Myers and they said it got there right before Christmas…hope to see it this week.

It must be inside. We didn’t see it. I’m sure you will love it. Maybe we will see you on our return to Sweetwater

And we watched 5 inches of snow fall today. I'm thinking about all that sunshine you're getting.

I been watching that nasty weather on the west coast. The solar works great out here.

BTW I really enjoyed reading on your web site. Very well organized.

Perry,
Sounds like you'll be eating Stone Crabs instead of Dungeness, both are awesome. I took the hoops home after the season opened in Section 3. There's plenty of crab available now and it is always cheaper for me to buy or get from friends. Your puller worked a lot better with the Bulldog installed. Now, I need to get the right size bucket so the rope will wind itself hands free.

Safe travels,
Paul

Paul, I agreed that crab is cheaper to buy but not nearly as much fun. I had a crab cake for dinner last night it was pretty good.

Glad the puller has been working for you. I assume your back to traps now that the nonsense has subsided.

Thanks! The website provides a good landing spot for me to publish photo galleries, links to our YouTube channel, and some of what I've posted here on Tugnuts, all in one place.

I had time off work and was planning to soak some crab pots this week, being the last week of Dungeness season, I wanted to leave them out all week, pull 'em daily to see what's for dinner.

I just got back from checking on the boat. ugh. The marina is frozen. All around Channel Surfing the ice is 1/4" thick in her slip. It made quite the crunchy sound as I stepped onboard and the boat rocked in the ice. At the end of the dock I saw 3/8th inch thick ice. No boat movements permitted with ice in the marina. It's not supposed to get above 25 degrees until Saturday. It's been down to 10degrees at night. So this is how winter crab season ends for me.

On the plus side, it was nice to be able to open up my phone, go to the Victron app, bring up the engine, thruster and house battery Victron Battery Smart Sense, which show voltage and temperature. The cockpit lazarette (port, starboard and center) are at 33 degrees. The cabin was comfortable as well. I've got a PALI engine/bilge heater in the center cockpit and another heater in the cabin that are working great.

Meanwhile, in Florida... the low's are in the upper 60's...

77 degrees here in Beaufort, SC today. Getting down to 61 tonight! Unusually warm here right now.

I have an awesome crab cake recipe that I can share.

No, I quit traps years back due to the pilfering and general lack of camaraderie amongst the other fishers.

The hoops got me back in the game since it was like the olde days...not so many people around.

I've had some terrific fishing in FL...I loved when we could bring our catch to Keys restaurants and enjoy
multiple cooking techniques along with the mandatory Key Lime Pie.

Cheers!

Normally, I would agree with you that crab is cheaper to buy than to catch. This season, I'm not so sure.
I was seeing Dungeness sell for upwards of $50/crab (whole crab, cooked) in the stores this season. ($20/lbs!). It usually sells for around $6/lbs.

On our 4 day crabbing trip to Saddle Bag Island, up near Anacortes this past August, we kept 63 crab.

Perry,
Damn, you get around! Have a great time on the east coast!

We are it’s very different on the east coast. The beer is cold and the weather is warm

Can you use the bubbler things where you are? (Somehow keeps the ice from forming around the boat) https://www.overtons.com/kasco-34-hp-ma ... lsrc=aw.ds

It's not very common for our Marina to freeze. We usually don't see temperatures down in the teens. This week, I've seen as low as 10 degrees. We're usually a lot of cloudy skies, grey, rain, low 40's.. through the off-season.

Last year, Dec 23, I ran up to Oak Harbor from Everett for a day of winter crabbing. This year, my boat's surrounded by 1/4" inch ice. It's supposed to get above freezing this weekend. I suspect early next week we'll be all thawed out.

We made it down to the Key Largo area today. Made a nice 25 knot run down through Biscayne bay at a fuel burn rate of just under 20 gallons per hour. Nice to go fast when you want. We are at the Pennekamp state park dock. We have real nice spot on the floating dock, only because we are a smaller boat. Thanks for the info on this place from Bobby P.

We made it to Marathon today. Made a run down from Pennekamp state park at 26 knots on a slight wind chopped ocean. Thanks to the crew of the Retreat for the tips on catching fish near Pennekamp. The fish tacos were great from the mangrove snapper. We will say hi to all the people mentioned above.

We’re wrapping up our Florida adventure tomorrow. Big thanks to all the Tugnuts folks for tips on getting around Florida. We are at Goodland tonight but will make our last leg in the morning back to Sweetwater marina. Brian - if you’re around, we would like to meet you and put a name to a face!
