A windy but wonderful start to our anniversary cruise as we put in at Jekyll Island GA, and met the nice folks at Jekyll Harbor Marina and headed south.
Even though a couple of 50 & 60ft yachts were turning back at the sight of the 4-5 ft swells and whitecaps on Jekyll Sound, we cautiously made our way across, adjusting speed for the following seas and wind, and swells. 2400 rpm was getting 9 kts and mast flag was straight out in front of us.
I did find that i could keep a little better directional control steering manually as we rolled about 20-30 degrees from side to side.
Didn't feel we were near the boat's or our limit, and it calmed down once on the lee side of Little Cumberland Isl.
It's nice being back in a tidal estuary, so full of marine and avian life, in stark contrast to the majesty of Desolation Sound. First time we've been shadowed by a patrolling flock of seagulls. Did they think we were a shrimpboat?
One of the challenges we looked forward to was running the security gauntlet at Kings Bay Sub Base.
There were 2 patrol boats shadowing our every move as we did our not so stately 6 kts, and altho i didnt see a Sailor manning a 50 cal, i'm quite sure they were ready. I was surprised we could even see a sub.
Crossing the shipping channel at Jacksonville was no problem, especially after experiencing the traffic in the San Juan's.
Nice folks at Beach Marine helped us dock. A nice dinner n dessert topped off a good cruising day.
