My boat lives in fresh water only and has the factory supplied zincs that look like new after 3 seasons. I'm not aware of any negative consequences....how important are magnesium alloy sacrificial anodes in fresh water?

Phil:

If your boat never leaves fresh water them Mangnesium anodes are whats recommended. Basically they are more sacrificial in fresh water then zinc or aluminum. I guess that begs the question.....what does the factory install? I've attached a link from Defender that talks to proper anodes, why, etc.

Fresh water is far less conductive than salt so electrolysis is far less - but not zero.
If your boat is in the water in a marina for 3 years and the anodes still look new, either the marina has a perfect electrical system at the dock, and all the boats, or some other piece of metal in your boat is the sacrificial part.
I would suggest getting a magnesium fish and hanging it over the side and see if it remains perfect.
If it does, you are good to go

The magnesium fish sounds like a good idea. I'll give it a try.
