We had a great time last year exploring the Broughtons, anyone planning a trip? ideas?

Very early stages of planning, looking at leaving Seattle June 20 or June 27 for 3 weeks. Family of 4 and a dog =)

Last year we did a "loop" counterclockwise towards Sunshine coast and then up through Desolation to the Broughtons and home towards Campbell. This year we are thinking clockwise ie Campbell River towards the Broughtons and back around Desolation then back down towards Sunshine coast.

We hit the typical places Sullivan Bay, Echo Bay, Lagoon Cove, Blind Channel, Kwatsi last year.

This year we want to try Telegraph Cove, Alert Bay, go back to Kwatsi, Lagoon and Blind. Any good ideas for anchoring, especially to the shore with a dog. Of course we will explore Desolation Sound, and try Octopus Islands.

Anyways, need ideas =) so i can plot our course.

We’re thinking of going that way late May or early June. Trucking Andiamo from Portland to Olympia, then to the Gulf Islands. Not sure of the route from there. If Johnstone Strait is behaving itself we may go that way, if not we’ll go the back way.

We are very open and maybe interested, kewpie us in the loop.

My wife and I would be interested in your proposal. We’ve been to the north end of the Strait of Georgia, but not the Broughtons. We have four small dogs with us so that has always been a factor the more remote the cruising grounds. We plan to launch at Anacortes April 27 and will be at Cap Sante until May 11th. We will be on the water for four months and would enjoy the company.

Hi Karl Etc.,

We're not going all the way to the Broughtons, but we are planning a loop to Desolation Sound and back during this same time frame, Leaving Anacortes June 20. Tentative agenda is up through the islands and back down the Sunshine Coast. We've got a few boats interested in coordinating on this trip and soon I'll be organizing names, itineraries, contact info etc.
We'd love to include you in the mix for the trip up if you're going that way. See my post here for the details: http://www.tugnuts.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14382

Hi Toki,
I saw your post earlier about Desolation Sound. One of the reasons for leaving "early" was to beat the crowds, which we learned from last year. Sounds like a great trip. We can't decide when to leave June 20 or June 27. I'm working on my schedule as well. I'll keep you watching your posts on the trip! =)

Looking back at these posts
I feel like you’ll be able to stay with your plan if you want to
Canada/us border is quite possibly openin on June 22
I’m looking forward to getting away to the clean air and open spaces
For now, San Juans on a hook is just the tonic

We just cancelled our Broughton trip, but hope to do it later in the season. Everything I have read says the boarder "may" open June 22 at the earliest. Our reasoning for cancelling for now was as follows. June 22 was later than we hoped to leave. Secondly if we went and the number of virus cases shot up (which is very possible) the boarder could close again with us on the wrong side leaving us trapped or quarantined 14 days somewhere.

Hmmm ... and being "trapped" for an additional couple weeks in the Gulf Islands, the Broughtons and Desolation Sound would be a bad thing?

Just a little update from the side of the border. At the daily presentation from our Chief Medical Officer and Minister of health yesterday the question was asked about opening the border. The minister acknowledged that the current agreement expires on June 21 but that he fully expects it to be extended once again. In any case BC will continue to require stringent quarantine measures even if the border opens. I’m not sure whether they would accept your sitting on a boat in the middle of Bedwell Bay for two weeks as unacceptable quarantine plan. 😉
The islands, including Vancouver Island, have been exceptionally fortunate during this pandemic with only 127 confirmed cases in a population of about 800,000. In fact, BC as a whole has been very well managed by the public health authorities with excellent government support in my opinion. You can see the numbers at the BCCDC dashboard https://experience.arcgis.com/experienc ... da29297ded. We are now down to 9 new cases per day but expect that to rise, hopefully only a little, once the effects of the loosening of recommendations become known early next week. The population of BC is a bit over 5 million for reference. The numbers are broken down by health authority and you can click on “Island Health Authority” to find 127 number.
These restrictions on the border are a challenge but necessary. I’m sure all the tug nuts on the south side miss coming to visit us in the Gulf Islands and you can be sure that we are missing our chances to cruise the San Juans and beyond. I don’t think it’s going to happen much this year. We’ll just have to play in our own backyards. Let’s just hope we all stay safe.
