While looking at boat for fishing at the Portland show, then the Seattle show I started to consider the
R25 for both fishing and cruising. The wife approval factor of the Kingfisher boats I have been considering is tepid on the excitment scale at best but high on the Ranger. The ranger is obviously a fun cruising platform but has anyone gone out Albacore fishing or halibut fishing offshore on one? I would be going out of Newport on the good days maybe 30-40 miles. The good days sometimes start good but end up a little shaky on the trip back. Feedback from others who have tried similar trips on a regular basis would be very helpful in deciding. Boat would be R25 with big yanmar.

Thanks for any help on this one.

Are you reffering to Newport Beach California? I'm down here in Dana Point California and regularly take my boat over to Catalina island trolling the whole way. This summer I was only lucky enough to bring a couple bonita but my transiting the channel at night cutts into my fishing time. When the albies were biting this last summer I went as far out as thirty miles and looked for fish but had no luck finding them. The beauty of the boat is the slow speeds wich are perfect for trolling. I even rigged a 1/2 scoop bait tank, that I ratchet strap to the swim step, out of a plastic dog food container. If your not in any hurry to get to the fishing grounds my boat works great. The heater is a great bonus also.

Thanks for that. I should have been more specific although you addresses some of my concerns. I am in Oregon so I was referring to Newport Oregon of course. The weather up here is a little heavier than Southern California. I guess what I was looking for is feedback from boaters who use the boat in heavier seas. It is typical to go out with 6-8 ft swells every thirteen seconds with wind waves at 3-4, not nice but doable. I was looking for some experience among users who have fished in conditions like this. I love to fish so I was hoping I could use this boat for this purpose as well as cruising. It would make my wife happy to get some use out of the money we spend for this toy as a cruiser, not just a fishing boat. Thanks so much for your response. Good luck with the tuna down there.
