Hi all! We're gearing up for another episode of As the Prop Turns. We'd love to hear suggestions for topics that you'd like to see in an upcoming episode. Thank you!

How about Garmin 201, the more advanced features?

Product roadmap. Lineup, technology, features. Fluid Motion, 5 year strategic vision.

I'd like to see one on trailering. As someone who has considered getting a tow vehicle and trailer, but doesn't have any experience with trailering, it would be great to have some educational content on this. It could include selecting a tow vehicle, selecting a trailer, trailer maintenance, how to launch and retrieve, trip planning and height restrictions, etc.

I agree with Gary S. A further, deeper dive into Garmin would be outstanding. YouTube is virtually devoid of anything truly helpful on operation of the Garmin system.

I am in agreement that a deeper dive into the Garmin systems would be good.

Another idea is a "class" on Boating weather. What are the apps really telling me? Why so many different Models? Why was the forecast calm all day and I am in 3ft waves?? Why do currents go "Every which way" in the san juans?..etc..

Rocky

I agree with an episode to answer Rocky’s last question. “Why do the current’s go every which way in San Juans?”.
For those that want a primer on the subject I recommend:

Tides
The Science and Spirit of the Ocean
by White, Jonathan

In short, the answer is complicated, thus the need for the “As the Prop Turns” episode!

If you did one on Planning a Route, you could go into currents, tides, apps for both, and then how to use Autopilot (which is really the topic I want more on).

Garmin 201 include the 76 and 86 series and their differances

Rocky, there are some awesome videos on YouTube that talk about tides and currents in the PNW and explain why they are so complex. There's a strong linkage between all 3 of your questions - and I suspect you're talking about Admiralty Inlet or possibly Cattle Pass, or maybe Deception? Those three are the most notorious for the exact questions you are asking. The current from the SJF flows almost east/west coming and going from the ocean, but the current in Puget sound and San Juan islands flows almost north south (with some weird exceptions like Colvos Passage which always flows north), so it often collides, and those collisions are what causes huge chop in both Admiralty and Cattle. It's hard to predict exactly when it won't be a "washing machine" off Port Townsend, especially when you add any wind to the mix. To make things even more complex, if you look at a current reporting station that's at the east end of the strait near Port Townsend, but not IN admiralty inlet, the slack current can appear to be at one time, but then a mile further down in Admiralty, the slack current is actually a big variance apart (sometimes an hour or two more) because of the nature of the current and its force when it's flowing east west or north south, depending on where you are. 🙂

I agree a more in depth on the Garmin

Night operations, am doing the Portland Christmas parade of boats this year and could use any help available

Perhaps something on fuel. I'm thinking of how much usable, ways to ensure a full tank, mechanical floats vs Garmin, etc.

There's already a lot of content out there about Garmin chartplotters. I suggest something more specific to the boats themselves. There are a few upgrades such as autoglide, different props, or battery management that could be covered. Also, options to carry extra "stuff" like paddle boards, kayaks, canoes. How much weight can you put on top of the boat before its no longer safe to do so? And, what about that port list? How have people solved for that?

I want to know if there are stronger currants in the middle or sides and how do you figure that out since every channel is different? It would sure make a difference in mileage!

I would like to see a great Modifications & Additions episode where you go through the best things you have seen done on the different models (interior and exterior). How to best use the space on each model. For example, using a tendon roof and plastic spice bottles, I turned the space under the window near the passenger seat into a very usable spice rack but I just locked into those. Would love to see what others have done inside and out for storage and usability.

I'd also like to see a deeper dive on Garmin that includes auto pilot working with multifunction screens, VHF and network. Information that is specific to our boats. In addition, it would be good to hear about the different chart options and which ones are worthwhile.

Since I truly believe there a many of us out here that LOVE our current boats and most likely will not buy another, information that is relevant for us would be most helpful, regardless of the topic, as we are Ranger/Cutwater ambassadors to future owners....please don't forget us!

I second this suggestion!
