Just went through this and we discovered that the G3 Chip was not in the Garmin and without it no auto guidance. Also take a look at the Software Version and the built in map should read BlueChart+LakeVu Built in v2018.52 and that is the G3 Software but it needs to Chip install to operate.

So even though the unit is listed as performing the auto guidance, on the Garmin website, it’s still dependent on having the correct hardware/chip?
I’ve upgraded to the most current software. How do you display which Chip is installed?
Do we have to pay for the upgrade or will RT/Garmin supply.

You will need a "premium chip" to use the autoguidance feature. I bought the 76878 Garmin LakeVü Ultra U.S. G3 HD - East chip since I will be mostly on inland lakes and rivers in the East and Canada. It was $153 at Anchor Express and works as a nice upgrade to the preloaded Lakes Vu software.

I would be VERY careful in using the Auto Guidance. I used it a few times and never again until there are some real improvements.
Case in point, I was going from Oaks Bluffs to Edgertown on Martha's Vineyard . A 4 or 5 mile trip this I did not have planed out using Homeport and down loading it. Never been there before, I used the Auto Guidance. I had and I thought everything set right! Depth at 10 ft, shore line distance normal and can't remember all the other setting.
We had friends waiting for us at Edgertown and there where watching us on AIS. About 2/3 into the trip my phone went off. One of my friends, "Get the hell out of there, your going though a rocky area!" The chart plotter was only showing the bigger rocks. I made 180 and got back into 25+ water. I was even telling my friend, "other boaters were in there too". He made a good point, they where most likely locals and new the waters.
