When I bought my boat the Autopilot remote (GHC 10) was ruined by corroding batteries. Garmin no longer produces those remotes so I tried Ebay and didn't have luck. People who won those auctions were paying $400+ for those remotes.
After doing more reading I have bought a Garmin Grid 20 remote. I put a 8610xsv chart plotter next to the original one when I bought the boat. Using the Garmin Grid 20 with batteries and an ANT wifi connection, I can drive the UI of the 8610. By choosing a 1/6 screen configuration with the Autopilot on it - I can use the twist knob and select button to drive the Autopilot remotely.
It's not as full functional as the original Autopilot remote but it's much cheaper and more versatile when controlling the chart plotter. My main use was to avoid being hunched down over the screen all the time.
Note - I tried to use the ActiveCaptain remote screen functions but the wifi connection was spotty and I didn't like not being able to trust it.
This solution works. I'll put it through its paces on a longer trip soon.
