I went to an "old school" auto parts store and picked up an 8" curved mirror. The type of place that would have a voltage regulator for a 1961 Ford Pick up truck. It had a 1/2" dia. shaft w/ball and a 1/4-20 bolt behind it. I drilled a hole thru my rail (not easy) to start. Had to use a center drill to get it started in the center. Eventually I opened up the thru hole to 19/64 and then I opened up the front side to 1/2 for the shaft. I just put the shaft in the 1/2 hole and put the 1/4 bolt thru the back and tighten it up. Once I was satisfied with the install, I sealed both holes with silicone. I don't want any water intrusion if I can help it.

This is great! I can back into my slip without hanging out the window of my R27. The head is in the way on the starboard side.

If anyone chooses to install mirrors on the rails, I recommend using a stainless steel clamp on the railing rather than drilling into the railing.

See this link where I provide a source for stainless steel clad convex mirrors and stainless steel rail clamps, with photos of the mirrors installed on an R27:
