Just noticed the following announcement in Local Notice to Mariners:

The Small Lock at Hiram M. Chittenden Locks will be closed from Monday, 12 Mar 12 at 1300 through Friday, 23 Mar 12 at 1700, for its annual inspection and maintenance activities. The Large Lock will continue to operate 24 hours per day and 7 days per week, and the USACE will attempt to lock the commercial traffic through as quickly as possible while still accommodating recreational traffic. This annual closure is important in ensuring 24 hour/7 day operation at a project that is approaching its 100 year anniversary. Much of the machinery and most of the gates and valves are original from 1917. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time and look forward to having full use of the Small Lock at the end of this closure.
Any concerns, please call David Carpenter, Navigation Supervisor at 206-789-2622 ext. 202 or his cell phone at 206-399-0159."

Since Recreational boaters will be directed to the large lock, you should be prepared with appropriate crew and equipment, (i.e 50 ft lines..)

Thanks Mac for the information. In the thread "Mini Cruise to Fisherman's Terminal" I have included a web site from the Army Corp with recommendations and requirements for transiting the Ballard Locks. I hope this is helpful for those of you who have plans to explore the Lakes from the outside.
All the best,
Bob
