Planning a trip from Baltimore, MD, to NYC, starting about July 16.
Just in the planning stages, so we are interested in any and all information/suggestions.

Our two commitments for the entire trip is one family gathering on Long Island, July 26, and another on our way back, August 11, in Wildwood, NJ.

Hope to meet a few fellow Tugnuts along the way!

I have stayed at Liberty Landing Marina in NJ, it is across the river from Manhattan. It is a first class marina with incredible views of Manhattan. There is a water taxi that runs from the marina to Manhattan. I would highly recommend staying there.

The inland water route from Cape May to Manasquan Inlet is not the most fun to do. If seas permit go on the outside and duck into the intracoastal along the way for your overnight stops. Give yourself enough time to make your drop dead dates. Schedules and boating are a bad combination. I have not been to Liberty, but as Brian said I have heard good things about it. The dock fees are not cheap, but nothing is around there.

Cape May to Barnegat Bay is 16 hrs via ICW. Most of the way is a no wake zone, Shoals, and broken ICW markers. The same route via the outside is 6 hrs +/-. Meyers Hole, just inside the Barnegat Inlet is a great overnight on the hook spot. Look for the mooring balls, anchor near them. Take the dingy across to near the lighthouse for supplies, deli, restaurants and such. Mind the channel markers at this inlet, it twists and turns around some very shallow water and shoals.
The run up Barnegat Bay is a piece of cake until the Manasquan canal. If you can, get to the canal early, and NOT on a weekend. I did the canal in a 14' inflatable mid-day on a Saturday, what a nightmare, never again. I might as well have been in a hurricane!
You have to go outside at the Manasquan inlet and run outside to Sandy Hook, then you're home free. Horseshoe Cove is a good place to drop the hook if you have time to kill. Mind the nude beach at Sandy Hook...
Hit me up when you firm up your arrival at Meyers Hole, I'll try to meet up with you.

We are thinking of doing the reverse trip at some point, maybe tow boat to Cape May. Liberty Landing is an excellent Marina, with high rates for slip rental (was on our list). There are other marinas on the Nj side of the GWB, also we stay at the Worlds Fair Marina (not sure if they do daily rentals -email Emil.Pape@parks.nyc.gov)
If you’re a city person, nothing will give you the view of Liberty Landing.
If you all get together let us know on land or sea, schedule bad this time of year however.

Thank you all so much for the input!

Here is my thinking. Once we get to Cape May, we pop out and head for Barnegat Bay, with the option of ducking in at Atlantic City. The next leg would be up to Manasquan. From there, Sandy Hook or Long Island, depending on our preference.

If we have bad weather, the ICW is navigable from Cape May to Manasquan, but not preferable for lots of reasons...

Barnegat Bay sounds like a nice place if we want to lay over for a day. How about Manasquan?

Thanks again.

Bobby

Going to Long Island. check the weather and seas. You can get on the inside at Hempstead Bay. The inside can be rather circuitous with shallows. I did a circumnavigation of Long Island in my C-Dory. It was a fun trip, but was glad for the shallow draft. Your other option is the East River into the Long Island Sound. Just time your passage with the current favoring you and near slack for Hell Gate. After that it's a nice ride on the sound with planty of places to stop if the seas get rough.

Barnegat Bay has a bunch of nice anchor holes. Meyers Hole as mentioned before, Tices Shoals on the east side next to Inland Beach State Park. Mind your chart for depth, there are places where you can get close to shore and walk into the boardwalk that goes over to the beach. There is a fee to get on the beach. A little more north on the west side is Berkeley Island County Park. The cove is marked on the chart as 2 feet, BS! There's 6-8' in there. This park just reopened after a rebuild, Sandy wiped it off the map. Heading north, go under the RT. 37 bridge, just after the bridge hang a right following the marked channel, Just up a bit you'll see a real nice place to drop the hook. North on the west side is Applegate Cove, followed by Silver Bay. Just north of the Mantoloking bridge on the west side is the F cove. It looks like a F on the chart, This was going to be a development that never happened. There's a shallow hump going in, but I've seen some big boats in there. You cannot anchor in the F cove. To spend time there we run the bow up on the beach, the stern will be in 15' of water. Coming out of the north end of the Manasquan canal and a tad west is Treasure Island, Pirates back in the day...
The Manasquan River has a bunch of restaurants with docks in either direction. Near the Manasquan inlet you can find anchorage to get into Point Pleasant to the south, or Manasquan to the north of the inlet.

We will start our trip North from Baltimore on Tuesday.
Thank you all for your input.

We plan to make Chesapeake City on the C&D Canal by Tuesday night. Down the Delaware Bay on Wednesday and anchor in Cape May Wednesday evening.

We plan to take the outside passages to Atlantic City, Barnegat, Manasquan and then up to NY. Weather will dictate exact days of travel. We have not planned our New York tour yet. We lived in NYC, so don't need to go ashore there. I've anchored behind Lady Liberty on a fishing trip, and that is the most breathtaking view of the city I've ever had. I want to share that with the wife on this trip. We have family on Long Beach (Long Island), so we plan to do some extensive cruising along the south shore LI Bays. We only have two dates we need to make, the weekend of July 25th for a family reunion on Long Beach, LI, and then on the tip back, we have family to visit who are vacationing in Wildwood NJ, the week of August 10.

Hope to see some of you on our Journey.

Thanks again for the local knowledge!

Tuesday looks good, W, T, F, however shows a 30-40% chance of Thunderstorms. I could meet you on Barnegat Bay on Sunday, but I think you might be north of there by then. If not, let me know!

This info is timely for us too as we hope to leave DC next Friday heading to Lady Liberty. And then who knows.

Where exactly is Meyers Hole in Barnegat Bay?

Found Meyers Hole! There was tremendous winds yesterday on Barnegat Bay. Waves of 4 feet and winds of 30 knots. We were about 11 miles north of Barnegat Inlet and we knew we had to find someplace very safe. Throttled up the 31 CB 3250 rpm’s and beat into it at 15 knots all the way to Barnegat. Found Myers hole just south inside Barnegat inlet. Anchored across from the work boats in a little lagoon. Very protective. Dinked over to shore and found a place called Vikings, who served seafood in the rough (BYOB). Just as we were finishing our food, the lightning started and the sky got very dark. Hopped in the dink and shot back across to the boat in the nasty windy rain. When we got on the boat, although it was still raining, Myers Hole proved to be well protected. We slept easily on the hook.

We left Baltimore three weeks ago circumnavigated Long Island on the Great South Bay. Had lots of great anchorages around Long Island, including a very sweet secluded spot on the inside of fire Island. Made our way through the Shinecock Canal and up and around Orient point. Came down the Long Island sound, spending a night in Northport and Mamaroneck Harbors. Came down the east river through Hells gate across New York Harbor waving to the Statue of Liberty and then headed into Great Kills on Staten Island. Yesterday we left Staten Island early in the morning came through Manasquan Inlet and as mentioned, beat our way down Barnegat Bay. Will be leaving tomorrow for South Jersey probably stopping over in Atlantic City. Plan to be back in Baltimore next week.

Our last boat was a 36 Albin Trawler, weighing about 20 thousand pounds. This Ranger Tug performs as well at Trawlers speed as the Albin, but also has the get up and go option that really makes it incredibly versatile. Needless to say, we really like the boat.

I’ll give another update in a few days.

Best,
Bobby and May

Sorry we missed you. Glad you found Myers Hole!. I've been boating Barnegat Bay for 30+ years, I've never seen 4' waves out there! Glad I wasn't!
As you went into Myers Hole, you would have passed some mooring balls and a marina on the right, work boats on the left. Past the marina is the hole you were in? Great spot! Most wouldn't go in that far, good find!
Maybe we can meet on your next trip.

Yes, deep in this creek on the west side (across from big work boats) is the place to be. We heard from a local about how bad the storm was last night. We just had a light breeze with the rain. Very safe! We are going to Meyers Hole (proper) to anchor and dink around. Is the town side interesting? We thought we'd dink over and take a walk around.

Great report! I am up in the Navesink River of NJ (near Sandy Hook) and we just did our first longer trip with our C28 to Fire Island last weekend! First time out there. Very cool place. We stayed at the National Park Sailior's Haven. Did you go through the Shinecock inlet?

Give yourself an option in case the wind is from the south or potentially squally on the day you want to head down the Delaware bay - I've done it on large sailboats and it can be pretty rough - with very few places to escape...

Be careful and enjoy!

Yes, there's not a lot there so it'd be a short trip. Climb the lighthouse? make a great pic of your boat.
