Have s 2017 RT29. Trying to understand the process of battery removal, as the space is very tight and only a few inches above them . Some say removal of a few screws and the whole bank slides out. Don’t see how, looks like all batteries sit on a plywood base which is calked in. Each battery is in a tray which is screwed into the plywood. What am I missing?

Hello JFrano,

The board that the battery trays are screwed to will slide out. That board is screwed to the stringer and probably has some sealant around the screw holes but isn't along the complete underside of the board. Once the screws are removed the board will slide aft for better access

Thanks,
-Kenny

Thanks , will give it a try.

Kenny, is this also the case with a 2014 C30s?

Yes it’s the same. Hopefully your battery cable slack was generous enough, mine wasn’t. Had to remove some cables to be able to slide them out far enough. If they are short, you may want to change with longer ones. Makes life easier for the future.

Perfect, thanks Kip

Has anyone had any luck in finding where these screws are that are holding the battery board in place? Did you find it by feel there’s no visual marker?

My advice.... when changing out the batteries be sure to take photos of all the cable attachments before removing them to make it more fool-proof when reattaching the cables.

But are you able to slide the platform out their on first before even being able to disconnect the cables, that’s where I’m at.

The screws are on the aft end of the plywood sheet. The plywood sheet is underneath the battery tray. The screws hold the plywood to the bottom of the lazarette. In my case there were two screws. Perhaps yours are painted over? Try finding them with a magnet. They are only about half an inch from the aft edge of the plywood.

The screws come out, the plywood slides aft, then the batteries can be removed.

Great explanation, thanks!

You were lucky. This is proving extraordinary frustrating. Took a screwdriver under the edge of the battery mounting tray and the deck and up the side. Using a hacksaw blade sliding all the way around could not find the screws.
So the RT Einstein who installed my battery tray, mounted it at least 6 inches forward and several inches inward and then placed a battery on top of it!

Thanks. Very helpful thread. I was just about to post a question about creating an access hatch below the cockpit frig to be able to access the batteries. I couldn’t see any other alternative because I assumed that the two visible screws at the aft end of the plywood base must have brothers and sisters on the forward end, if not in the middle as well. Does that mean that the four or five batteries are held to the floor of the locker by two screws only? If so, that raises other issues. I’ll go and have a look. I have hull number 30.

I know this thread is old, so hoping someone with knowledge will reply.

Trying to replace engine battery but getting to it is difficult. The batter cradle/tray in my boat will slide aft, HOWEVER, the NEG cable running from the engine batt to the actual engine is too short to pull the tray aft enough to gain access to the engine battery. The cable is maybe 4’ and I cannot fathom why RT wouldn’t give you enough slack to pull the cradle/tray aft to get to the engine battery. Is there a trick to this that I’m missing.
