It's time to replace my battery bank again. Can your electrical guru comment on best options given that I don't want to add a bunch of complexity and new components, to ensure all three charging systems are compatible. IE Solar, engine alternator, and shore powered inverter/charger. I'm pretty much sure that AGM's will be drop in with charger mode change, but not so sure about Lead Carbon or LiPO? Particularly with LiPO it appears at least the start battery would have to be a different type which adds yet another complication, unless I'm missing something? Thanks.

if you want this to be as simple as possible just replace the AGM's with AGM's

28GG has it right. Don't over think it unless you have 4k burning in your pocket for some lipos. Figure out what you have now, order the replacements. Should be cake.

Hi pleeson,

Great question. The short answer is that Severum88 and 28GG have it right. The batteries originally supplied with your boat are essentially what we had determined were the best at the time. Of course you are free to do as you wish, but for the best performance without having to do any reengineering, sticking with the tried and true is your best bet. Also, not sure about the LiPos, but the LiFe (lithium-irons) are coming into their own. The technology has developed enough to where the ones on the market have become stable and reliable. We are beginning to use these in some of our smaller applications, but that required some redesigning of the electrical system. Therefore you would have to do some research to see if they would work for you, and what you would need to do to make them work with your system. (we have not yet done any work on the 28 in this regard) Hope this helps a bit, but bottom line is that replacing the old batteries with similar ones is the best bet.

Cheers,

Ralf
