We have a rail mount Magma kettle propane BBQ on our R27. The boat's in charter when we're not using it, so we like that BBQ to be clean and shiny when we're done. After cooking meat on the grill, the cleaning is such a time consuming and messy pain that it takes away the desire to grill at all. Any tips from fellow tugnutters? How do you grill to produce as little mess as possible? Any magic formulas for cleaning the BBQ?

Thanks

Toki,
I have the same issue.
Previous owner was not to cleanness oriented on the Magna and the last charterer complained about the grill as running too hot and not spiffy looking.
We are exploring options short of having to replace the unit.
None have jumped out and hit me yet!
Replacing the unit would be an expensive proposition from the ads I have looked at on line.

The early Magma grills had a significant design flaw in the valve. The flame level choices on the valve were effectively off and incinerate. If you have a Magma grill with a gray turn on/off valve you have the old bad valve. Call Magma and order the new blue valve. Ask for the smaller orifice for the blue valve. It’s not a recall but the new $$ valve offers much better flame and temperature control than the gray valve.
We have a cover for the Magma when not in use. For exterior rust we use Diamond Magic which keeps the grill’s exterior as clean as possible. It also works great for rust on the stainless rails and such.

For the interior we take the grates home, scrub them with steel wool and then put them through the dishwasher. To clean the inside, once per year, we take the grill off the rail and clean it with a small steel wire brush. Not perfect but gets the inside reasonably clean.
In use we clean the grated with a grill brush after every use.
PS: We also use the Magma 3 bottle fabric pouch which mounts to the rails in the cockpit. If a bottle leaks the propane is not near anything hot.

scross,
I'll look at the grill when we get up to Anacortes in a few weeks.
We live in Utah so we don't get to the boat as often as we would like.
There is a cover on the grill bit I think the previous owner hardly ever used it from the quick look at the grill we had during the survey last fall.
The grill was not high on the list.

To clean the inside grates we take them home and put them in the oven and turn to self clean. they come out like new!
