One of the many things I never purchased for my R-21 is a bell. I have always been looking for the right one, good tone, nice shape, etc. Where have others (who have purchased a bell), where did you place them. I though is placing mine on the mast and having a removeable arm. Any thoughts on this. Thanks Mark

A bell is not a Coast Guard requirement for a 21 foot boat, and, if my memory serves me correctly, I think the requirement for a bell has gone away for all boats.

I am sure there is someplace where you could have a bell cast with your boats name on it. If you do install a bell, you might want to have a way to secure the clanger, or you might end up ringing your bell with any kind of sea state. 😛

The bell rule now applies to recreational vessels of 12m. (39.4 ft.) to less than 20m. (65 ft.). These vessels must comply with Navigation Rule 35 concerning sound signals for restricted visibility, ie, fog, snow, sleet, sandstorms... But wait! It gets even better...even larger vessels require a bell at the bow and a gong at the stern, (and a brass section amidship, since the ship's whistle is also required during periods of restricted visibility.)

I have been looking at: http://www.bronzebells.com/

Not inexpensive but they appear to be high quality and will cast lettering for you. They have clips so you can hear them, the bells sound very nice.

Find a bell you like and take it to your local trophy shop, most will engrave just about anything, and the cost is reasonable...While you're at it have a set of matching glasses made too.

do any of you guys use an installed air horn or whistle of any sort?

I would love to get a humongous air horn to put on my R21EC. But, there are two things preventing me from doing it:
1. I would need an air compressor and a large air tank to support it.
2. The sound of the air horn (pitch and volume (decibels)) is regulated according to the size of the ship - big ships get big sounds and little ships get little sounds.

I have been looking for a tug type whistle for my tug that has a toot-toot sound that is either all electric, or requires only a small compressor and tank. I have not found one yet.

I would also like to find a cecil beard for my tug, but I have not found a proper one yet.

you may want to look into a hailer/speaker with the recorded sound that you want?

If you are going to buy a chrome plated bell buy a perko I had to replace the west marine one after polishing the chrome off it.

Check this thread on CBrats http://www.c-brats.com/viewtopic.php?t=8152

Also I will send a picture of Hercules, our previous Willies Tug with it's new beard later.
