I'd love to find a great spot to take my new R27-OB to view fireworks on the 4th. She's in Elliott Bay and I'd like to be able to get back quickly afterwards.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

I fill my boat with friends and anchor on Lake Union every July 4th. I think it's a blast, but it's not for everybody. It can be crowded, chaotic, and full of drunk idiots who haven't a clue how to anchor, but for some sick reason I love placing myself right in the middle of the chaos. We bring out kayaks, the dinghy, and other water toys, spend the afternoon swimming, paddling around the house boats, and BBQing, then we've got a front row seat to the fireworks barge at night. Then after the show, you can head back out through the canal or stay on the hook for the night. July 4 is the one night per year when overnight anchoring is allowed on Lake Union.

Now if you're looking for dock space with a good view of the fireworks, that's a lot tougher. You might call the Center for Wooden Boats on south lake union and see if they have anything to offer or any advice.

Consider the 3rd of July display in Poulsbo's Liberty Bay. Great show and a fun gathering. In years past you can't make a reservation at the marina for the 3rd, but if you have a slip prior to the third you can hold onto it. Liberty Bay is a good anchorage and it will be full of boats. Circle raft-ups, dinghy parades, lots of activities in town. Viking Fest takes place at the same time. On the morning of the 4th it's like a land (water) rush as boats depart for 4th of July celebrations around the Sound.

Cheers,

Bruce

I'm assuming you're open to something other than Lake Union? Otherwise you can forget about getting back quickly.

How comfortable and how fast do you want to run in the dark? You could trek up to Everett and catch the Tulalip fireworks.
