I'm considering adding a booster since I already am paying for ATT Hotspot and unlimited data. When I'm in harbor, my service is OK now, however, not 30 miles offshore. I'm wondering:
(3) Some cell signal is required for the Shakespeare Stream to enhance usable cellular signal coverage." Right now, I can get a usable signal up to about 25 miles.

I will say though, that starlink is still the best move.
ironically the weboost saved me when my starlink cable went bad at an event lol
Starlink requires another plan and I'm always in cell range except when fishing far offshore.

personally I went starlink mini with a 12v voltage converter to power it over the existing cable. I turn it off for the months I not using it.

What Cell phone booster did you end up with? Our Starlink mini will power off our Bluetti elite V2. I'd like to find a similar all-in-one contained Cell booster that I can power the same.

I gave up since nothing was compelling. However, the harbor I'm in now has terrible cell service since it's near the airport (fine once you are distanced). Hence, I'm reconsidering a cell booster. I'll keep the thread updated if I find a solution.

Paul, We have a complete Weboost kit that we had on our r31 before we bought the Solara S310 and then Starlink.
We will make you a screaming deal on it. It helped us when Sarah was working. Just don’t have a need for it any more.

We run a WeBoost booster on our boat, in addition to Starlink. I'm frequently transferring the WeBoost to our truck when we're on road trips and could use another head unit. It sounds like the WeBoost would work to get you a usable signal as long as you have at least minimal connectivity.

We have weboost on our van as well...it's a permanent setup so I don't move it to our boat. It works really well with a weak signal. I've gone from 1 bar barely able to send a text to 3 bars and streaming.

That said, we love our starlink mini. I have a case to carry it between the van and boat but primarily leave it mounted to the boat. Like others have mentioned, you just need a 12v to 24v/30v converter to ensure the voltage stays above 12v. Power usage is under 25W. It's really reliable underway.

Which model of weboost unit did you end up with? Amazon has a variety of models from them, but it would be interesting to see which works best for our boats. I plan to stick within 30 miles from shore to shore between Puget Sound and Desolation Sound, and maybe as far west as Neah Bay.
 
Best WiFI/Cell booster I've found is a Peplink Mobility 42G antenna or the new Antenna Max with a Peplink Max BR1 5G Mini router.

I've got the Peplink Mobility 42G antenna and Peplink 5G Pro max router installed on my boat. I was 15 nautical-miles inside Glacier Bay when I noticed I had service, on our way out of Glacier Bay. I snapped these photos at the time. I did a lot of cellular testing on our SE Alaska trip to see how far I could push it. I had spotty cell coverage crossing Cape Caution and the Dixon Entrance. I was txting photos of the sea-state to a friend as we crossed. I had service right out front of Tracy Arm/Endicott Arm in Stephens passage and was able to access Facebok. I had spotty coverage (it would come and go, in and out, as we traveled from Petersburg to Juneau) up Fredericks Sound and Stephens Passage. All three of our cell phones (two were T-Mobile, 1 was ATT) said "no service". But connected to the boat router which had an ATT SIM card in it, and the 42G antenna provided us additional coverage when underway.

I see, you do have a dedicated cellular WAN gateway. So, you probably do have a separate cellular plan on it, correct? I was thinking more along the lines of boosting my phone signal as I do have a decent plan on it with t-mobile and have it act as a WiFi personal hotspot…

I never got around to posting an update. The unit, weBoost Drive Reach Marine Antenna Bundle - 470154-M, was installed and now is working great. It's about 4 years old did not work initially since the adapter fit poorly. I contacted weBoost who was not helpful at all and said the unit was too old to be supported. Hence, I found the right adapter on my own and, after replacement, the RRSP reported excellent signal strength, generally, going from one bar to three. The installation was straightforward, however, I got help drilling a hole so the wire could be run into the PilotHouse, from the Radar/TV tower, given that there are many other wires that I did not want to damage by drilling.
 
I’ve been conducting real-world testing of my marine cellular system using a Peplink MAX BR1 Pro 5G and Antenna MAX. The system draws only about 6 watts, is fully waterproof, and continues operating while the boat is underway at approximately 28 knots. I also use the Peplink router to run Starlink when at anchor or at the dock, which costs me an additional 28 watts of power. I run cellular year round on my boat.

5G SA means 5G Standalone. The connection operates directly on a 5G core network without requiring LTE.
5G NSA means 5G Non-Standalone. It uses an LTE connection as the anchor while adding 5G for additional capacity and performance.

The results below were recorded in real-world cruising conditions, including anchorages, open water, and while underway. Starlink was disconnected during these tests.

A few observations:
  • The best overall result was 313/44.5 Mbps at Saratoga Passage on T-Mobile n41.
  • The best upload result was 48 Mbps at Cortes Bay, BC while roaming on Rogers.
  • Deer Harbor had the best RF quality, around 22 dB SINR, with an 88/25 Mbps result on n66 5G SA.
  • North of Lasqueti Island, BC was unusual because upload exceeded download: 24.6/29.1 Mbps while underway.
  • Ganges had decent signal strength but only 16.6/5.61 Mbps, showing that signal bars alone do not predict performance.
  • Even the weakest location, Shallow Bay on Sucia, still delivered approximately 5/5 Mbps.
  • Canadian roaming throughput can be excellent, but latency was generally much higher than the Washington tests (due to roaming plan).
  • So far, the limiting factors appear to be spectrum, SINR, tower loading, network architecture, and roaming—not the Peplink BR1 Pro 5G or Antenna MAX.

SINR means Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio.
The easiest way to picture it is this:
Imagine you’re sitting in a bar talking about boats. There’s some background noise, but you can still carry on a conversation without much trouble. That’s good SINR. Then the band starts playing at 6 p.m. The person across from you is still talking just as loudly, but now all the additional noise makes the conversation much harder to understand. That’s poor SINR.

At Shallow Bay, the problem wasn’t simply weak signal strength. The modem was dealing with a noisy RF environment, likely including reflected signals bouncing off the water. Those reflections can interfere with the direct signal, making it harder for the modem to distinguish the useful transmission from the surrounding noise.

So a boat can show decent signal strength and still perform poorly if the SINR is bad.
