Bic Sport SportYak Rigid Dinghy

Anyone have any experience with this type of dinghy? We have an inflatable (RIB) that came with our tug but it’s sprung a bad leak and is probably non-reparable. I ran across this dink in a West Marine sale flyer today and thought it might be a decent alternative but couldn’t find a lot of information or reviews online. Thanks!

If it was me, I would stick with a inflatable.

My inflatable is 14 lbs heaver, 8" more LOA, wider, can handle up to a 10hp motor, sits higher in the water. Yes, its three times the price.

It has flat floor that is over the keel. If water splashes in it goes under the floor. Also, your stepping into a flat surface, not an angled one. Plus if you ask, they will make any mods that you ask for. For me they put two D rings on each of the inner sides. I take the oars apart and store them on the inside. So there out of the way. I am on the start of my 4th year and all good.

This post brought me back to my youth! Our family had a SportYak back in the early 70's - now labeled as the 213. Amazingly, other than color, it hasn't changed at all! I remember my dad lifting it onto the rooftop of our Plymouth Fury 3! - I was amazed at his strength - now I realize it wasn't that heavy!

It was a good little boat - and we put it through some tough usage - as a white water raft careening down the Gunpowder river, and as a beach boat riding the waves of Nag's Head to shore. Indestructible.

That said, it doesn't seem very suitable as a primary dinghy - I agree that an inflatable is much better suited.

Almost forgot - we also built a home-made sail rather than buying the sailing rig - complete with daggerboards on either side. A fun project - and with a little breeze could sail upwind a little, and scoot right along on a reach.
