Hello
I am back with another foolish question. I have a 2010 R21EC. My high water alarm went off the other day while the marina was just about to put the boat away. They were kind enough to pull the plug and drain the bilge for me being I was not around. I would like to know if the factory installed a float switch along with the bilge pump and what brand is the pump. The access hole is so small and I find it hard to get in there and look around.

Thank You
Annette 😀

Hello Annette,

The Factory DID install bilge pumps with float switches...on my 2013 it is a Johnson pump, 750 gph size. The bilge pump is a critical item on the 21EC and it is subject to failure being that it resides in the wet bilge area. My advise is to always have a spare PUMP and FLOAT SWITCH on hand to make a repair. You can use whatever is your favorite brand. Some, like the JOhnson, have a 'cartridge' type motor that is replaceable such that you can leave the old base and insert the new motor into it...making replacement a LITTLE less painful.

I was concerned about boating in heavy weather and seas/rain coming into the bilge. I added a second Johnson pump matching the original and keep a spare cartridge on board. Gives me peace of mind. The second pump is forward and above the original and worked good when the primary became clogged with junk (leaves etc.). The spare can be used in either position if necessary.

My experience has been that the sensors go out before the pump itself. Before you change anything first check the inline fuse. Remember, at least on my R-27, there are two circuits that feed the pump. One is the override/manual switch in your panel and the other is for the sensor in the bilge. After checking the fuse also check the sensor. It has two embossed circles. Make the number two ( or for us older folks, the peace sign) with your fingers and put one finger over each circle. The sensor should be clean and free of oil sludge. Clean it with simple green if necessary. The pump should come on in a few seconds and after you remove your fingers it should go off after about one minute. Also you should periodically remove he pump cartridge and clean out small hair and debris that can accumulate in the impeller.

Thank you one and all for the replies they were very interesting.
What I really needed to know on the 2010 R21EC what kind of bilge is in that boat for that year. The name of the pump and is there a float switch built into the pump or is it separate. My brother is coming to visit and said he will install the new pumps for me. I want to pick up two of them before he arrives. I called the factory and one of the men in the service dept. said yes there is a pump installed but could not tell me anything else, float switch or not, name of pump nothing. No help at all.

Hello Annette,

Since the factory continuously upgrades/improves the boats, even if someone with a 2010 21EC answered your question, it may still not match what has failed in your tug. Hence my earlier reply...get whatever you like.

My 2013 21EC has a Johnson 750 gph like this

This is a 'manual' pump meaning it needs a float switch. It is of the 'cartridge' variety meaning you can buy just the motor with the black 'wings' seen above the red cannister base in the photo above...so you don't need to buy two complete units to have a 'spare.'

My factory float switch is the Johnson Ultima...it's fairly compact so that helps fitting it into the narrow bilge area. Like this

Having a spare float switch is a good idea.

These items are here

but you can buy them at most well-stocked boat places.

Good luck!
