The “on” light of aft bilge breaker stays on with switch off. Also, pump does not come on when turn switch on (light stays on). Is this a switch issue, pump issue or both? Forward pump works fine.

Thanks!

The bilge pump works on two different circuits One is manual, the switch at the helm you speak of, and the other is automatic, which has an inline fuse probably below your battery switch. There are lots of things to check. You could have a bum breaker switch in the panel, which in turn may have activated the pump to the point that it burned out. I would check to see if the pump works. First try to activate it in the auto mode. If it does not work then you may want to put power directly to the pump to determine that the pump is indeed blown and you don't have a bad sensor. If it is blown you may have a bad breaker switch that ran the pump till it seized.

I agree with mike, however there are two possibilities. First is as Mike noted the float is stuck (see Monday post "Failed Float switch") and the pump has burned itself out. The light in the switch comes on when the float activates the pump and when you manually switch it on. The light on and pump not running suggests that the float is stuck and the pump is history. Secondly, have you tried the reset button above the pump switch. That little rubber nub above the switch is a breaker/reset button. To reset you must push it all the way in and hold for a second. In either case refer to Monday's post.

Hello Bart,

Sounds like you have the classic 29 where your bilge switches are in the AFT by the 1/4 berth. If the light is on and the pump is not working in either the auto function or the manual over ride function it sounds like the float is stuck on and has burned up the pump like others have said. If the breaker stays on and doesn't trip then most likely the pump needs to be replaced. Also best practice to check power and ground at the pump its self as this will tell you all you need to know if it is working correctly or not. Feel free to email me direct if you need more help on this.

Thank you,
Kevin Lamont

Thanks all. I plan to start taking things apart tomorrow. Will meter each part and see what is going on. Still do not understand the light being on when switch off.

Sounds like the light comes on when power is going to pump through the on off switch or the float switch, it doesn't matter if pump is working or not the light just says power is available!
Hope this helps you. Bob

Update-took it all apart, cleaned pump and float switch and all works perfectly! Can’t say enough good about Johnson bilge pumps and switches...the twist off motor assembly and clip on float switch made the job far easier than expected. Just wish Ranger Tugs gave me a little more room to work!

Did light go off after your service?

And tey the light went off and works properly. Thanks all!
