I need to replace the rear bilge pump in our 2019 R29S. I inadvertently broke the flanges that hold the sensor so without it the pump doesn’t function properly. Two questions. First off does anyone know the make and model of the bilge pump? Has anyone replaced there’s with a different bilge pump then the one that came with the boat? And if so why?

Thanks for your help,

Jim F

Jim -

Mostly they have used the Rule bilge pump from what I can see. They are typically red, white and blue in color. The owner manual for your model says the 1100 GPH model. I am sure you are aware there is the float model and the automatice model that cycles every 2 1/2 minutes.

Might want to look online and see if it looks familiar to what broke.

When you say sensor, you mean float switch? Yes?

You can always add a float switch rather than replacing the pump. If I had to replace it, I would replace it with a bigger one that would fit the hose. Why, more GPH going over board if something was to happen.

The sensor I mentioned is the black plastic item that sits next to the actual pump. It’s the kind that when you place a finger over each of the two sensor circles you can make the pump start to pump. I do not have the kind that cycles on every 2 1/2 minutes.

Jim,

I am pretty sure you have the Johnson 1000 gph bilge pump with the Ultima Switch. The whole assembly is for sale on Amazon for $88. I say this not just because we have the same boat, but a bit more than a year ago I broke the flange that keeps the sensor attached to bilge pump. It is a weak link in the design. When you try to get the sensor off to clean it--which you have to do or it misfires (in my case it wouldn't shut off once started)--this weak little flange easily breaks.

And of course, getting the new base with the built in flange is a royal pain so I just got a full assembly and now how two spare bilge pumps.

The hassle, as you well know, is putting the base with the flange back in. There should be three screws, if memory serves, attaching it the bottom of the bilge. For a short, squat--add ugly--guy like me it is a royal pain to get those screws out and back in. But once done, you can put the pump and the sensor back onto the bracket and you're good to go without rewiring anything.

I finally resorted to using a cleaner-soaked cloth on a long stick to do the cleaning and have avoided breaking the flange.

Best of luck! Find a lanky teenager to do the work for you.

Hey Jim,

Take a look at this, it is the base for the bilge pump and can be replaced. However, it says 1600, 2200 and 4000gph BUT is only $8. From what I can see it should be a straight replacement. You could always replace it with the current bilge pump we use and if that is something you would like to do instead feel free to reach out to me direct. Here is the link:

Hope you and Lisa are well!!

Thanks Kevin, Iggy, Matt n Jeff for your thoughts n suggestions. Today I’ll disconnect the current unit so I can get a close up look at exactly what I have to see what will work best.

Hi Jim
Not sure if it will work for you but on mine I just Zip tied the sensor to the side of the pump. Been working fine

Update.....when taking the original bilge pump n housing out I found the base to be cracked in half n the flange that holds the sensor to the housing broken. I think both of these things happened when I was taking the pump from the housing one time when I wanted to clean it all out. At any rate the pump is an SPX Johnson 1000 GPH multi combo unit and I’ll replace the entire unit and then have a backup pump motor.
Thanks for all of your comments and suggestions.

I received the replacement bilge pump to install which has lead to a couple of questions. First up there is a 1/2” piece of starboard that is mounted in the bilge that the bilge pump sits on top of. This means the bilge really can never get dry/empty. Our R29S is a 2018..... are other R29S boats bilge pumps also mounted this way? Second question..... the new bilge pump package(same pump as the one being replaced) came with a choker valve to inset in the exhaust elbow that exits the pump housing. I have no choker in the original pump however there is a check valve up stream on the discharge hose. Does anyone know if both are needed or was the choker left off because of the check valve?
