Boat Insurance?

Since my 2016 post on this thread we have switched to Anchor Marine as brokers and out policy is the Travelers Yacht plan. Most extensive insurance coverage I have ever seen for something that is suppose to be in motion. We have $90k stated value for Our Journey plus $30k personal property, huge liability and medical caps, water towing coverage, roadside assistance while trailering, dinghy coverage, $10k trailer coverage and more for $640 a year. Pricing didn’t go up this year when we renewed.

Just renewed with Geico/BoatUS for $430 for a 2012 R29, no increase from prior year. Never bought the cheapest insurance I could find, my thinking is if I ever need to make "the call" want it to go well.

BoatUS is service oriented and personable along the lines of Ranger Tugs themselves, it's a good feeling.

Geico is also available thru Global Marine Insurance n comes with Boat US basic towing. Interestingly enough it covers cruising to the Abacos in the Bahamas at no additional charge.

i need to check out Geico thats seriously good value!

whats your insured value tugnnaweigh?

With insuring big ticket items I pay a lot of attention to the agreed value/replacement value number as that’s what we’d be discussing should I need to make “the call” and I monitor what the insurance provider does with that number, if anything, over the years.

For the R29 we did a blend of NADA, purchase price, loan amount and what they call “agreed value” or “replacement value” which all ended up right at 125K. Due to fishing/dive gear we gave contents an additional mid four figure amount. I do run big deductibles as I fix most everything so likely that helped with the premium some.

Also, I’ve been with BoatUS for a long long long long long long time and have never filed a claim (my overall insurance philosophy is never file a claim) but you do often hear other never filed a claim folks speaking to the every renewal price increase drumbeat.

I mentioned I don’t buy the cheapest insurance but I should clarify that’s mostly relevant to all the other stuff I insure; with boats I just call BoatsUS and say I bought another one so I can’t say I shop around.

I think one of the biggest values you receive for your upfront insurance dollar is the 24/7/365 feeling that if you have to make “the call” it’ll go just fine, like you know if you call Ranger Tugs it’ll go just fine.

Anyone have boat insurance with USAA??

We just got our bill from Boat US (Geico) and our premium went up $153 to $1315 a year for no reason at all. We’ve haven’t had any claims but we still got a large increase. Looks like I’ll be on the phone Monday shopping for new boat insurance!

USAA does not insure boats directly but hands you off to Progressive for coverage as a USAA member. I had previous boat insured this way but went with Global Marine Insurance (Markel Insurance) for our R27-OB

We just purchased insurance through USAA’s Progressive desk. They were much less than Global and BoatUS but then we have all our insurance through USAA and have had for nearly 45 years. We were sad when USAA turned their boat insurance over to Progressive. Have not had any claims for either our RV or prior boats with Progressive so we don’t know if the USAA customer service will be there. When we asked USAA about it, they were quite concerned that we would be displeased and to let them know any negatives with our dealings with Progressive.

We have had a major loss as USAA/progressive members with extremely good service with our travel trailer. That said, our 27OB is insured through USAA but with Markle. Very good pricing. No claims but we have heard Markle is very good.

We did some shopping after we got a big increase from BoatUS/Geico and we ended up going with Flo at Progressive. Geico raised our rates for no reason so I decided to shop around and Progressive came in $400 less for the same coverage. Shop around and ask a lot of questions because prices very a lot from one company to another.
