Boat Lift Bunks Separation Measurement

My boat lift guy says the bunks should be separated by 3 ft on "nearly all" lifts. That just doesn't seem right to me. Does anyone know the proper width to separate them for my 2012 R25? Would the measurement be from outside to outside, inside to inside or center to center? I want to be careful not to crush my sea strainer. TIA

Also, he as saying we should make the separation between the bunks a bit narrower towards the bow. Any ideas? The bunks are 14 ft long.

Mr. Bigdeal, I see in your photo album you have a trailer, why not measure the bunks on the trailer and duplicate the measurements for the boat lift? As far as being closer together towards the bow than stern I would ask why they don't do that on the trailers going down the road at 60 MPH,
Also I looked at the hole in your boat in your photo album, any explanation and how was the fix?

Thanks for the response Bob. I did measure the distance on the trailer however it is not appropriate for the boat lift due to the reduced vertical clearance to the horizontal cradle rails on the lift. In short, I only have about 12" of vertical clearance before the boat rests on the horizontal cradle rails.

The hole was properly repaired by a fantastic local company and has been worry free (Thank God)

Mr Sam, do you have enough travel on the boat lift and water depth to raise the bunks on the lift so you would have the clearance needed. Just a thought Bob
