That is a wide open question with a lot of answers. I will take a stab giving you my opinion. First and most important component of diesel longevity is MAINTENANCE! If the engine is maintained as per recommendations The D4 will last easily 5000 hrs plus. Diesels don't like to over heat and they don't like to be overloaded (over propped). Diesels rely on clean fuel and dry, clean air for combustion. The better ventilated the engine room the better longevity for the engine.
( this is a weak area for an engine installed in a RangerTug. There is no ventilation! But the manufacture says it works. Time will tell when the boats and engines are in service for 20 plus years like many diesel boats that are cruising the waters)
Hours? That is a misconception. I will ask you your opinion on a couple of examples.
* Do you think a D4 installed in a R29S properly loaded and engine propped as per manufactures recommendations, mainly operated at 90% of its wide open throttle or 80% load 3500rpm -10% = 3150 rpm as a main cruise speed burning approx. 10 gallons an hour will last 5000 hours? That would be 50,000 gallons of fuel burn. My opinion is NO
* Do you think the same engine that is mostly operated at 80% load but overall is operated at 50% load burning 7 gallons an hour will last 5000 hours ? That would be 35000 gallons of fuel burn. Possibly but my opinion is it will not.
* Do you think the same engine that is operated between 80% load and 20% load with an average load burning at 40% load or 5.6 gallons an hour will last 5000 hours? That would be 28000 gallons of fuel. My opinion would be yes. That D4 will make at least 5K hours.
* Do you think the same engine operated between 80% load and 20 % load with an average burning at 30% load or 4.2 gallons an hour will last more that 5000 hours? That would be 21000 gallons of fuel burned at 5000 hours. My opinion is yes.
Maintenance and engine operation will be the determining factors on how many hours an engine will last. The D4 is a well built engine and will give a boat owners years of operation if it is operated and maintained properly.
