Hi, my name is Andy. I am new to boating and my first boat is a Ranger Tug 31CB ( I decided to start by buying my third boat first 🙂 ) I am looking for someone I could hire as a captain who could teach basic boating skills and who is familiar with Ranger Tugs. I'm keeping the boat on Orcas Island but would be happy to meet up with someone in Anacortes, Friday Harbor or any other location not too far away. Hi Andy,
I would strongly suggest signing up for a boating course from the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.
They offer courses as short as 1 full Saturday and Sunday, to 12 and 13 week classes.
Unfortunately these are all class room classes.
We are not allowed, because of liability issues, to do any hands on training.

I have been a member for 37 years. I took the 13 week course and learned a ton of info after buying my first boat but I was not satisfied.
So I became a member and did get the hands on knowledge.

Welcome to the RT community! For in person instruction, I would suggest to call San Juan Sailing in Bellingham. They are primarily a charter service and provide captains to do intensive training -- for example by going along and living on board for a few days during a charter. Given the current situation, I would imagine their captains may not be busy and therefore might be available for other training apart from the charters. Or they might know others to suggest.
 
Contact Ranger Tug, they have a retired person in Anacortes (a retired engineer) that trains people who buy used Ranger Tugs. I looked for his name but It must be on my boat. He spends a day with you teaches you about the boat, gives you a checklist prior to taking off, and then takes you out spending the day learning how to dock both backing in, and normal docking along with going over all the electronics with you.
 
The guy from Ranger Tug is Glen Wagner. He is great! I don't have his contact info, but you should be able to find his name in the Anacortes phone book. I think he is also on this forum.

I might suggest that you set up a second lesson with whoever you choose. Maybe for 1/2 the time you spend the first time. Taking it all in the first time is like drinking water from a fire hose if this is your first boat. Secondly, you will develop some questions after boating for a few weeks or months. The second time around it just seems to make more sense and you see the “why” instead of just the “just do this”.
