Has anyone applied bottom paint on a R29? How much was it? What brand/kind should I look for? Have you found it useful?

There are numerous choices for bottom paint.
Whether it is a 21 or a 25 or a 29 makes no difference in the paint type - only in the total cost.
Type of paint (ablative or not, epoxy or not, etc.) is determined by the water and how often the bottom dries out and whether it is on a trailer.
In my case, since the boat spends time on the trailer and in the water I chose (as recommended by an expert) Petit Vivid.

I chose to put on two coats of epoxy based primer before the bottom paint. Ranger says they do not have blister issues and that is vast overkill.. I'm a believer that overkill is better than no kill and regretting it later
(I have not heard a claim of blisters on a tug)
I did all my own taping off (multiple times) and painting over a one week time period.
Saved the labor cost (and having the marina double the price of the paint)
Had the satisfaction.
Had a half dozen offers to paint other boats - told them they could not afford me.

I did the same as Denny-O as we trailer our boat as well. There are many comparison calculators or charts on the internet where one can figure out the best paint to use for there specific boating needs. Check out
http://pettitpaint.com/perfectpick/ , plug in the necessary info and the best choice from Petit will be shown. I think West Marina, Defender and others have a similar tool.

Petit Hydrocoat Black
$157.00 gallon when not on sale
On my R-27, I can get two coats per gallon

Two thumbs up for Petit. We had two coats of the hydrocoat eco (black) put on after having our boat about 8 months . The product applied by the factory (not a familiar brand to me) did not protect well in the Columbia River. The Petit has done well. We went with the eco to do our part for water quality in the freshwater rivers of the northwest, where we are doing all our boating right now. We did not add the barrier coat because of the expense of sanding the factory product all the way down to the gel coat. If I had it to do over, I would not have the factory apply the bottom paint, and I would instead start with a barrier coat and Petit. But I think the boat is well protected without the barrier coat as long as we make sure we don't let the bottom paint wear down to0 far before reapplying.

We had our R29 bottom painted by Southwest Boat yard in Newport Beach two years ago. It was the first application since the dealer had the bottom paint done on delivery. Whoever the dealer had paint the bottom did a crappy job. They did not sand the gelcoat or put a barrier coat prior to painting, hence it lasted all of one season. The cost from Southwest would have been around $1100.00 but with the added labor and undercoat it ended up being around $1600.00...we are on season # 3 and my diver said the bottom is in great shape. They applied 3 coats to the bottom. I did a bottom painting on a prior boat and trust me its not a DIY project thats worth it. Pay someone else to deal with it..

Thanks all...I now have some info I can discuss with my boat yard.
