New member here. Having been intrigued by the R21ec at the Toronto Boat Show a couple of years back as a potential future alternative to sailing, I went to the show this year with the idea of taking another look, not knowing it was discontinued. When Paul of Lefroy Harbour told me that they had the very last R21ec built, I spent a few hours of soul searching and decided to pull the trigger.

Impatient for the Canadian spring, I will spend the next few months working my way through the extensive forum archives. We'll be moored at Outer Harbour Marina in Toronto.

Happy to become a Tugnut!

Congrats! If you are interested in full aft enclosure check out my pictures. Doug at klacko and Jeff at precision canvas, both in St. Catharines can build to your needs. Both do excellent work. I have mentioned before that a robust frame is essential in this boat. You need the extra hand hold when moving around. The typical frame we used on sailboats are too flexible to support a persons full weight.
If interested email me and we can talk.
We will be spending the summer in the north channel again this year. All but a few nights are at anchor.

I am considering full enclosure; a top for sure. As the boat will remain at Lefroy until May, I have Canadian Yacht Tops quoting on both. I have checked out your pics (beautiful), as well as others, and have considered both rigid and folding frames. There are arguments for both, it seems. Any other opinions?

I am also considering having cushions made for the cabin top spaces on either side of the V berth hatch. Has anyone done this and is it a practical consideration? I realize that someone sitting on the starboard side would block the captain's view when under way, but it seems it might be a nice additional seating area at anchor, or if one desires sun.

Congratulations!!

Needless to say I am extremely jealous as I hope to purchase a R-21EC this spring and had been watching the one you bought online. Alas since it was out East and I am on the West coast it would have been even more expensive for me.

Truly beautiful boat and a piece of history to boot! I will have to content myself with the right gently used one that we turn up out here. 🙂

Well done!

I never had it in my mind to buy a new boat and I'm still coming to grips with what for me is an expensive impulse buy, but I realized that I might be waiting a long time for a used one to fall into my lap. I'd assume they come up for sale more often out there. It is indeed a beautiful boat, particularly the 21, IMO.

Congratulations, this is a great boat, we own one and really love it! Did you know that there will be a Ranger tugs reunion this summer on the trent severn Canal? We might show up if work permits this would be with our tug or a 25sc that we plan to buy if we sell prior to the summer coming up.

If you ever have a chance to come down to the Rideau canal, come say hello, we are at the Portland marina. The full enclosure is totally worth it, on a rainy day and at night or in a marina you will get more privacy, less bugs, and stay dry. We love ours, on a really hot sunny day, it is much cooler inside the cockpit.

On the cushions for the front deck, we thought about it but we have been using throw cushions in the cabin and at the rear bench so it was easy to take two to the front to sit on. Dual purpose for everything. Did not want to have to store more stuff inside the boat when not in use.
I also made a sun shade for the front hatch, it ties to the two loops that support the mast when down and rolls up onto the eyebrow when traveling. Really keeps it cool in the berth and allows the hatch to be open in rain. It hooks to the rail with small bungee cords to loops welded to the rail. I had the same guy who make the aft frame, the bow roller and mooring bit weld them there for me. First one was tan fabric as a test, I had the canvas guy, Jeff give me a few yards of the fabric from the enclosure and I made a new one to match. Needed to be a bit wider and longer than the first.
All the best...
