Buying a Sharrow propeller for my 27OB

I noticed on some Sharrow social media posts, in which they are making claims about effectiveness, they have comments turned off. I’m assuming that’s because they anticipate a lot of negative feedback in the comments (that’s typically why brands do that).

They are a young company with a complex product. I’m sure there will be plenty of upset customers while they work out the kinks.

We just installed a new Sharrow MX3 propeller on our 2019 Ranger Tugs R-27.
I gotta say, it does wonders for this boat! 16-mph cruise at 3000 rpm! Before, it plowed along at 10 mph at this rpm.
Just what we were looking for, a boat that cruises efficiently in the 15-25 mph range. (Who really wants to cruise a boat like this at 30-40?)
I think this prop makes the boat behave a lot more like the old inboard version - although it doesn’t take away the high top speed of the outboard.
(I have a performance graph comparing the original Yamaha prop to the new Sharrow prop, but I don't know how to post it here. Is there an easy way to upload a jpeg from your laptop?

My family and I like cruising around 30 mph. It’s one of the things we really love about our OB RT.

Not sure how to post my Prop Comparison Data Graph here, it's stored on my laptop as a jpeg.
If anyone can tell me how to do it, I'd appreciate it. I don't see any straightforward upload option on this list.
I did post it on Facebook, so Facebook users might be able to see it at: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10219303891227590&set=p.10219303891227590&type=3
Let me know if you'd like me to send it directly to you. Perhaps someone can post it here?
Thanks,
Henry

Yes, we like the ability to cruise fast as well, but we also like to go slowly sometimes, especially in choppy conditions. Water gets hard at higher speeds! To us, a notable drawback of the Ranger Tugs outboard models is that they redesigned the hull for top speed, it has now become a deep-V, planing hull instead of the semi-displacement inboard version. The result is that the OB model really doesn't like to cruise in the 12-18 knot range. It struggles to get onto plane, and it falls back off plane as the throttle is pulled back below 3800 rpm.

This is why we're so excited about the Sharrow prop. It allows the boat to perform in the mid-range much more like the old inboard models. There are many times when running at 15-20 mph is much more comfortable than a higher speed, and it's nice to have a boat that lets you do that. With the Sharrow prop, we can now cruise comfortably, quietly and economically at 3500 rpm - something we could not do with the original prop.

I would love to experiment with a Sharrow prop. But $5k is just a bridge too far for myself.

I spent $1k on the Lenco Autoglide, another $600 on a Power Tech 4 blade prop on my RT-27-OB. This combination improved my hole shot immensely. I no longer need a runway to get on plane. This combination gives the stern lift needed to cruise much slower.

I can cruise comfortably on plane as slow as 11mph.

I’d hope that at least the Sharrow may improve mpg. But I’ve not seen that data.

I’m on our way back from a weekend on the boat. So I thought I’d run some tests on this flat water.

3000 RPM @11mph @7.2gph. = 1.53mpg

And I’m loaded heavy as we outfit our boat as our second home. Dinghy and motor in the cockpit. 3/4 tank of gas. 1/2 a tank of water. 2 people onboard.

3200 RPM @12mph @7.9gph = 1.52mpg
3500 RPM @13mph @9.4gph = 1.38mpg

4 blade Power Tech prop (15.25 x 15) and Autoglide (at these slow speeds the tabs are usually fully deployed).

What’s the MPG on the Sharrow prop?

Still not able to post graphics of our Performance Data with new Sharrow prop on this Forum.
However, this data can been seen (in graphical and tabular form) on The Hull Truth website: https://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-forum/1262143-sharrow-props-65.html
See my posts #1289 and #1293. (My other posts: 1246, 1271, 1272, 1279 & 1299.)
Needless to say, we are very happy with our new Sharrow prop on our bright red R-27 "Adeline Belle"

Thank you. I got the graphs you posted. Will compare it to my numbers and run some calculations. 🙂

I think this is the chart referenced. I grabbed a copy from the hulltruth

Can’t wait to hear your initial impressions and results! I’m really considering one for my R25 with the Yamaha 250 OB, which is basically the same 4.2L V6 on your 27, just tuned up to 300HP. I’m definitely interested in seeing some results on fuel consumption on a Ranger Tug, but also all of the other purported benefits of low-speed handling, reverse power, planing RPM, and noise reduction. If there’s appreciable “check marks” by most/all of those, it will be hard not to justify the upgrade…
If I flashed my future R25, I think I'd be focused upon improving MPG, rather than HP or top speed.
