What is the overriding factor for max engine rating of 300HP for the C-24? I have a 24DC and would like to install a larger motor than the 250HP Yamaha currently installed. Is it weight? Torque? Mercury has engines that are considerably less weight per HP than Yamaha. The 250 seems inadequate, especially when getting out of the hole. Very SLUGGISH. Thanks for the help!

Hello,

There is an option to upgrade to a 300hp Yamaha from the factory. You can upgrade from the 250 to the 300, but we rate the boat for up to 300hp based on the size and capacity we are going for. If we were to overpower the boat there would be major safety concerns. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Kevin, Can you please expand on the "major safety concerns"? Typically, boats are concerned with weight or concerned with twisting forces due to excessive torque. Understanding what the major safety concerns are may help me understand my options more fully. I already have a Cutwater with a 250. I'm looking to repower potentially. Thanks you!

Hello,

The concerns when over powering any boat is the ability of the boat to perform as designed at certain speeds deemed acceptable for that specific boat. For example, if you were to put too much power on the boat you could become uncontrollable at WOT or speeds above what the boat was designed for. Turning and slowing down are other concerns and factors to take into place. There have been lots of stories reported where someone over powered the boat and caused an accident either to themselves and/or other boaters most investigations end with someone over powering the boat. Not only have they gone against manufactures specifications and limits but they have also broken laws that make them uneligible for insurance, here is a good article that really breaks it down. https://www.allatsea.net/more-speed-mor ... your-boat/. Hope this answers any additional questions you might have.

Thanks,

Wait what? There “is” an option for a 300HP Yamaha? I ordered my 2021 c24 and was told it was absolutely NOT an option due to safety concerns. If so, how much was this “option”. The 300 is simply a better engine for performance and economy. Love my c24 but it is slow out of the hole. Really could use the extra pop.
Thanks

Hello,

Yes is this is an option for the C24 walkaround and the C24 dual console only not the coupe.

Thanks,

Thanks Kevin. Kinda glad to hear that.

As I search the pre owned and new C 24 options, there are a couple of 300 HP units. Obviously not the new units. I'm pretty picky about low end / hole shot response....and I had just about talked myself into thinking a 250 would be good enough with the stepped hull and the other anti-surface tension attributes of the hull...with large trim tabs. I'm also a bit of a hull design geek, but not an engineer.

So I have some theories as to why the 300 was discontinued as a power option, and at some point I'd like to see if my theories are right. I also have noticed that the Beneteau Antares 8 models, their closest to the 24C, seems to come with 200 or 225 HP engines only. This seems strange to me as all my boating experience screams 300 for these type boats. I know a lot about power/hull design/weight/prop pitch - but clearly in this niche of outboard pocket cruisers, I am a total noob.

So for now, I'm wondering if I should narrow my search to the units with the 300s on the C24, and figure nothing from Beneteau will be what I want.

Which Yamaha 250 comes on the boat, specifically 2020 models?
