C-30 Foward Berth Storage

Has anyone made any modifications to the forward berth to make it easier to lift / get at the storage underneath? with the mattress topper from YacthBedding on and the bed all made up, getting at the under-berth storage and worse yet accessing the thruster / macerator compartment is an exercise in contortionism and an almost guarantee of wrecking my back. The only "right" way to get at this is to completely dis-assemble the bed and lift up each piece. Has anyone done a hinge or gas shock or anything like that? TIA!

Getting under the bed berth is a challenge. My answer on my R23 was to build shelves on the side rails and a better shelf underneath. I don’t know if this would work or help on your boat but here is a video link I did for this build. https://youtu.be/W7j7bh4y2UE?feature=shared

No ideas, but, I'm looking at a big toe bruise after dropping the very heavy (add adjective) first section (facing bow) on it. There's a lot of storage there and access to the bow thruster, but, it access comes at a big price, so I'm following.

Good Morning:

I have a Ranger Tugs R29 Sedan and made mods to access the forward storage underneath the bed. It looks like the R29 and C30 are similar in that that have a walkaround bed; the only difference appears to be that our R29 has 3 cushions and the C30 2 cushions. I also have the YachtBedding mattress topper.

My wife and I spent MANY hours trying to figure out the best solution for us and it was not easy; all had some issue or compromise. Finally, we tackled this project this year as follows:

* We did not want to store the 3 existing bed cushions and create something new so we carefully removed the staples and fabric from the wood frames. We figured that if we had to go back to the cushions we could easily.

* We addressed the wood frame closest to the bow first. We considered just drilling a finger hole and lifting it but found it was not a better solution than the original configuration. We settled on hinging it to the bow bulkhead below the mirror. The biggest challenge in this was having to reshape the wood frame to allow it open without rubbing against the hull liner and vertical pads. We chose at this time to not install a gas shock as a simple wood rod keeps it propped up. We did add a few blocks under the wood frame to keep it from moving.

* The center and aft wood frames were pretty much good to go except that we trimmed them to match the YachtBedding mattress topper.

* We are having some canvas work done this year which will include better cushions to lay the mattress topper on. Emphasis will be on easy removal, lower height, and NOT permanently attached to the wood frames.

That sounds like a fantastic improvement.

One thing I would add (and planned to do if we kept our C30) is an underlay of Hypervent. It allows circulation under the mattress to reduce condensation there. https://www.hyperventonline.com/

interesting. does this go under the stock mattress, or under the mattress topper? Id imagine if under the stock mattress you'd have to staple it to the bottom...

It goes under the mattress. And yes, that would require removing the staples, etc. ... which is why I never got around to it on our C30.
