Hi Cutwater and Tugnuts,

Mark Mansfield asked my to post the details from our recent trip to the Bahamas so here it goes.....

1st of all, I would like to let everyone that reads this know that I have been extremely happy with Mark, Ronnie and Andrew from the factory. When I first bought the boat (1 previous owner 2012 C28) in April I had some minor growing pains learning the in's and out's of the boat. However, it didn't matter whether I was out at 10pm or 8am weekdays or weekends Ronnie would answer his phone. That said, customer service plays a huge role in my purchasing decisions and I was only validated more when the guys that know the boats best were happy to call me back....and keep in mind, I bought a used C28!!

So, June marked my 40th year in this great world and I wanted to spend it with a couple very close friends and the girl that makes me the happiest. That said, we towed OWT-Kasting with my 2006 6.0 liter diesel F-350 from Tampa to Lake Park, FL just North of West Palm. BTW, the Lake Park Marina is an excellent place to put in for a day or two and it was only $25/night for secure truck and trailer parking while we were gone. The morning (approx 0830) of our journey we shot a 90 degree bearing with 3 waypoints from the Palm Beach Inlet and headed out. Our first waypoint was only 7 miles off shore so we could get an idea of speed and fuel burn and the other 2 were 22-24 miles apart. I am a retired Army Officer, so I am all about time hacks and reporting to higher HQ's so at each way point we used our SAT phone to call our progress back to friends that were awaiting the call. Those same friends back on the mainland also had our full float plan and had all the emergency numbers ready in case the worst happened. After our first waypoint was crossed we were in 2-4 ft seas and were pushing straight into the waves at about 11-13MPH burning approx 1.5MPG. With that burn and speed the entire trip took us about 5.5 hrs to make it to the Old Bahama Bay inlet on the West end of the Grand Bahama. OBB is a wonderful place to vacation and was extremely laid back. We fished and island hopped throughout the 5 days we spent there and just had an all around great time. We reversed our plan for the return trip and this time had a nice SE wind with quartering following seas. That changed all our numbers on the return because we surfed a lot and maxed out at 20-22MPH (3200RPM) on the backside of the waves pushing us along. We also averaged 2MPG and made the trip in just over 4hrs.

I am happy to answer any specific questions about the journey and can say that I was very happy with the C28's performance throughout the trip.

Take care -- Keith

Kieth,

Thanks for your posting - the details of your adventure are interesting.

We have made the trip across the Gulf Stream before in a 40' trawler and know the respect that the trip demands. We are looking forward to crossing in our new (for us) R25. One question I have though is what insurance company do you use and whether you needed to get a rider on your insurance policy for the Bahamas? Our trip will not be for a year or more, so we put that concern on the back burner. Our current insurance co (Safeco) will not allow travel to the Bahamas in any case.

Glad your trip was enjoyable.

Doug

Hi Doug -- I have All State here in FL and they cover me for the Bahamas. Let me know if you have any other question as your trip nears.

Take care - Keith
