Looking for recommendations on mounting a dinghy on a swim platform that has a factory vertical safety rail on it. I'm currently looking at the Weaver six-inch drop system which seems like it would work by pivoting further out from the edge of the platform so I could just tie it to the railing. Also if I switched boats could I ever do this with the weight of an 8" aluminum dinghy? Appreciate any thoughts here. Thanks.

Not sure I understand the issue you are trying to solve. On our R27 Classic the 4” offset Weaver davits work fine with safety rails on the swim step with the stand offs. No need to tie to the rails (I wouldn’t recommend tying to the rails due to stress). I can’t imagine why it would be different for the C28. The offsets are generally set based on the height of swim-step from the water and mounting location of the dinghy davit clips.

I have a Highfield UL240 that I use on my C-28. It's an aluminum RIB. I don't have the safety rail (sometimes called 'staples'). The Highfield is 8 feet, just the right size to have on the swim step without catching the wake from the boat. Weigh seems fine, I think it weighs 77 pounds. The outboard goes on a bracket on the cockpit rail.

I am currently using a dingy sling to carry it, which seems to work particularly well for me.

Several of us with C28s run the weaver davit system with the rails and as mentioned above they work fine. I run a light weight setup with the Takacat and the 2.5 hp Suzuki.

Thank you all for your responses. Looks like I will be going with that 4" weaver davits.
