C28 hard dinghy recommendation

We have our 2019 cutwater 28 due next month. Does anyone have a hard dinghy recommendation for the back of the boat on weaver Davits. We have a big dog and can’t have an inflatable because of his nails. I am curious is anyone has dinghy they like.

the biggest issue is going to be weight on the stern. for instance heavy dinghy, davits, and engine are a challenge.

your second issue is beam of the 28. at 8'6" there are not many hard dingys available. there are a ton at 10'. some lovely wood types too.

( I dont own a dog) but I see many dogs in inflatables; what is the concern with an inflatable? I thought the fabric could handle the dog nails?

If you decide on a hard bottom/hypalon, West Marine makes an 8'6"..I have a brand new one with Davits, standoff arms, slip-on cover that cost nearly $4500. Never been used. Can sell for $3200.

Do you find the Portland pudgy to cause the swim platform to sit lower in the water during cruise speeds?

The Portland Pudgy is comparable in weight to a RIB. I have a 8'10" aluminum RIB Gala mounted on our C26 weighs 112 lbs Portland is about 15lbs heavier so very comparable. With the RIB mounted Via Weaver davits the platform may dig slightly more but this can be corrected by adding more trim tab engagement. The biggest deterrent of the dingy mounted on the platform no matter what style is the loss of stern visibility. The Portland is 52" wide add 4" lift from the weaver, it is sticking up 56" above the swim platform . The Gala mounted on my platform is 60" above the platform.




It works and we like having it and we use the dingy. There are always pros and cons to everything. I would not be worried about carrying a dog in a inflatable Rib. Even a standard inflatable would be ok for the dog. The dogs nails is not the worry on a standard inflatable. The worry is when going a shore and beaching. You must be careful not to drag it up on a sharp object. A RIB or Portland this is not an issue.

Another option I’ve always fancied is something from clc boats. Like the Eastport Pram

At 65lbs it’s not too heavy and short enough.
