I have a 2012 Cutwater C28 w/a Garmin GPSmap 7212. It currently has a transducer that glues to the hull near the shower sump pump. I do a lot of fishing in the Puget Sound / San Juan Islands and I am looking for a transducer that lets me see the bait & fish much better than I can with this setup. As such, I am considering going with a thru-hull transducer. I'd love to gain from the experiences of others who have converted: what transducer did you chose, where did you mount it, any issues, etc.?

We don’t have the same boat but we have similar hulls so maybe what we installed would work for you? We have the Garmin GT51M-THP, which are a CHIRP set of 2 transducers which allow for CHIRP, Sideview, and Downview. We rarely lose sonar at any speed even in choppy, turbulent seas, and we have great target separation and structure ability. We do a lot of salmon fishing as well as other bottom fish and prawn etc so while it’s not cheap it does work well. As a guide friend asked me “is your fancy sonar system going to catch you more fish?” I replied that I’m really not sure but my wife really likes it. He said buy it tomorrow....

HI Shano, Is your Garmin GT51M-THP a thru hull or glued to the inside? We improved our Garmin sounder reception by moving the transducer from an inside oil bath on top of the propeller, to glued to the inside hull close to the shower drain box. But loving to catch more fish, I am considering an outside transducer.

Ours are thru-hull transducers, one per side. The CHIRP is on one side and the Dow view,Sideview is on the other. I’m pulling the boat today so I’ll take a few photos and post to show the locations of the transducers. Thru hull transducers mounted in a good location will out perform all other transducer types whether shoot through the hull or transom mount. The Hull Truth electronic forum has lots of info and they discuss the latest technology in depth.
