When using the trim tabs, is there a loss of efficiency, i.e. greater fuel usage, when one brings the bow down?

in a word : no.
Cutwaters run bow up.
Cutwaters are marketed as "semi-displacement" which many Naval architects will tell you doesn't really mean anything. In truth the Cutwaters are planing hulls that spend much of their time plowing trying to climb up the back of their own bow wave. A friend who knows a bit about hull dynamics suspects the cutwater design is giving up some lift toward the stern due to the drive pocket and keel layout. these boats do not "get on step" in the fashion you may be accustomed to.

they are wonderful boats but make sure its the kind of boat you want.

I do not have an issue You need to realize you sit higher and a lot more forward then you are used to.. There is a lot of bow raise throttling up but trim tabs bring it down nicely .. These are not formulas by a long shot... Find someone to take you out for a run.. These boats are not for everyone.. But those who have them really love them ..

Your original post inquired about the running attitude of the cutwater compared to a large Formula, your edit now asks about tabs.

There are a few threads on tabs you may want to peruse.
We have not noted a decrement when using the tabs - we tune our running pitch to deliver the best RPM/Speed for a given throttle position when we are not using our tabs to accommodate sea-conditons, less so just to move bow down for visibility as was your concern in your initial query.
If anything the tabs may improve efficiency - it could also be wishful gauge reading on our part.
As much as one uses tabs on the cutwater I am looking for better tab control switch gear. I would love to find a slider/lever akin to an aircraft flap lever that works with the Bennet tabs. I've only driven one boat with such a set up - a high performance RHIB - and it was one of those "duh" experiences when one realized how much easier and more intuitive it is.
